i recall there used to be portraits for wives of the generals. now it seems they were removed. it is step backwards from the original one if you ask me.

They're not removed. I've seen them in a video. The family screen looks quite different, but it's still there.

Watch from 2:18. The guy cycles through it quickly as he's just talking about the UI. But, you can see him look at the family tree.

You might also be thinking of the Medieval 2 Family Tree, which I remember had wives. Though I can't remember the original R:TW version of it. They were very similar games though so maybe it did have the same tree.

Yes the Rome 1 family tree design was basically the same as Med 2

Both had pictures of the female characters as well correct?
In M2 we could even send princesses on missions and in Rome1 you could marry them to generals if I am not mistaken?

You could definitely send princesses on missions in ME2, for diplomacy and marrying generals (your own or other faction's). It took me years to learn how it sort of worked from stumbling across some guides, where they'd gain traits depending on the amount of money in the kingdom at the end of turns, their parent, the buildings in towns, etc.

One big benefit was that you could use them to marry an adopted general to make sure their children got the royal ties trait, and your noble line wasn't considered non-royal or something, since generals could only have 4 children adopted or not, you could screw yourself over there by accepting adoptions. Children and adoption offers tended to keep happening so long as there was a space for the family sized compared to the cities size or something. I imagine Rome might have worked on the same system and probably still will.

Yes the female character did have their own portraits, although one thing that has actually come to mind is that all of them had the same portrait (which was also the case in Med 2 for the non-Princesses as I recall). But Rome didn't have Princesses or anything like them at all though.

One thing I'm little worried about looking at the video that was posted is if they really are just going to use blank silhouettes for all of the non generals.

I dont remember the details anymore but sounds like a reasonable system

They did have several models per faction apperantly :):

So I am very much expeceing at least the same models to be lifted back in

It would be a brand new concept if they dont give portrait to non-general or governor characters.... but I am strangely ok with that as long as there is a cool placeholder icon replacing them and its not the same for males and females

The reason for that is that these characters are frankly not relevant yet and not showing their model can actually help keep track of those that do already have a presence on the map.

Bow the reason this might not work at all though is when an important and experienced character is not assigned anywhere - that character wold then loose its image and hurt recognition ... so there might be a good idea in this but I guess the safer route is just to give all family members character icons

BTW: I can hardly wait to get aging character icons again :)

From what I've seen the non-playable characters in the family tree seem to be just blank silhouettes. Looks a little creepy in my opinion as if all non-general familly members are ghosts or something. Takes the humanity and immersion out of it really.

Do you think they might add a couple of more character portraits?
The original portraits were very good and they all need to be ported into this game but there were often too few of them around and including +2 for each culture group might be enough to resolve that limitation + give the game a fresh look

Unless they can perfectly replicate the look of the original portraits, then I very much doubt it.
