maybe because you know what to do on the 2nd runthrough?

I'm guessing he means he did Leon A and is doing Claire B? the B scenario is shorter for both players.

Where did you enter the station? Through the city at main gate or through the fire escape? Former is A, latter is B.

Leon A and Claire A are the same length. So are Leon B and Claire B. (The difference is around 3-5 minutes between characters.) You were simply not running as much to find clues or the next place to progress, that is all. Called improvement. Happens to some people.

The following comments are based on Hardcore mode:

Claire's game is easier / shorter for the most part compared to Leon's, the only really hard part of Claire's is her final boss because he's an ammo dump... his pattern is easy to figure out but he absorbs ammo and has a lot of health.

If you haven't saved up enough ammo to beat him it could block you from finishing her campaign, mostly on HC mode though, on Standard he's not as bad.

G4's main weakness is the Spark Shot though, so if you saved all the ammo for that and use the Gatling Gun then you should be able to beat him so long as you power up each Spark Shot to max.

Her Grenade Launcher does little to no damage against him, it's all SMG, Spark Shot and Gatling that really puts the hurt on him.

The B scenarios are almost as long as the A scenarios, they just switch some stuff around...

Speed runners are beating the A scenarios in around 1 hour on standard, so if they tried hard enough they could probably beat the B scenarios in around 45 to 50 minutes... it's not that big of a difference honestly.

On game A you have to do the tutorial part of the game which is the gas station + the opening run to the R.P.D. and the east hallway with Elliot... All of that stuff literally only adds about 5 to 8 extra minutes of game play compared to the B scenarios.

There's some stuff in the lab on Game B that changes the dynamic a bit, on game A you get the modulator past the double licker hallway but in the B scenario you get the modulator in the main shaft on the dead Umbrella soldier. This allows you to avoid some backtracking because the lab flow is faster on game B... which saves an additional 5 - 8 more minutes.

Those are the biggest differences, there are others but they're rather minute, generally everything is the same from Game A to Game B when playing the exact same character.

frag grenades works well against G4, since it blows "all" of his eyes at once every grenade

Yes, it is. That fight is on a special mechanic, you must damage all eyes in the chest area (the rest of him has 3 million HP, so you'll never drop it fast enough). The spark shot is okay-ish since the final tick and explosion does an area damage, but grenades is what that boss is really weak to as they damage all required hitboxes at once. If you save all grenades throughout the game for this one fight, it is over in seconds.
