Evading G-adults unscathed?
What is their tell for when you can run by them unscathed? Is it a visual, a sound?

I found this video but I can't figure out what the tell here is because the video is too dark.

Any help would be appreciated!

To know how to evade them, it's better to look for visual cues.
The G-Adults have 3 "modes".
1 - "sleeping". They're underwater, and just their hump is showing above water.
2 - pursuit. They've extended their arm, and are going after you. If they connect, they grab you.
3 - idle. When their body is mostly above the water line, but they're not doing anything.

Now, how to dodge them. If they're sleeping, just run through the right (their left). They'll only wake up after doing a little animation, and as long as you don't touch them while they're doing this, they won't grab you.

If they're in pursuit, the only thing you can do is to run backwards (away from them) until they give up. Now pay attention to this visual cue: they give up when they slam their hand on the water and submerge for a second. This is when you should run through them. You have to do this very quickly.

If they're idle, then you either bait them into pursuing you (get into a small distance and prepare to run backwards), or stay far away from them for a few seconds (really far away). They'll do a pose and start spewing G-Embryos (little creatures that seek you). They'll spew 2 or 3 of them. During this animation, they won't do anything to grab you, and as long as you don't shoot them, nothing interrupts this animation.

Now, those tips don't get you a 100% evade rate against them, because during the game, there are special "situations" where the usual doesn't apply. For example, in the room of death (the one with 4 G-Adults), the second one won't allow you to run through the right, because there's no space for your character to pass. So at least in there, you have to run through the left. If you run through the right, it'll grab you 2 or even 3 times in succession. In that same room, the last G-Adult will already start in pursuit mode, which doesn't happen that often.

If you want to practice that stuff, the best place is either the room of death, or start 4th Survivor/Tofu Survivor. The first 2 enemies in the Survivor modes are two G-Adults. Now you may have seen from multiple videos that what people do is dodge the first G and then get grabbed by the second (use an item to shake free), but there's actually another way: if you run backwards from the first G, instead of dodging, it'll do two things: the first G will give up and slam its hand on the water, and the second one will start to spew embryos. So you can run through both of them.

Also, if you shoot them from a modest distance while they are walking/idling, they will automatically submerge in response and do a surprise attack from underwater if you stay in place. Their model has to teleport a bit, so they are respawned and respawned while doing that. In a bit easier terms, if you can startle them to force a submerge, you have a few seconds to walk past since they stop existing briefly. Speedrunners use this in the G-Adult gauntlet all the time.

This is incredibly detailed and helpful. And that room of death is exactly the room I need help with. Thank you!!

Wow, this is really helpful too! Do you know of any videos that show this technique?

practice the animations and you'll get it.

I was able to get through the room both times unscathed following this strat:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hjQOYf1Lkow&t=1h33m

Basically he kills the first two with the magnum (I did have to switch to the handgun to burst some shots at embryos), he dodges the third. He goes into the plug room for the puzzle. Then he dodges the third and fourth on the way out. In particular, the dodge at the end of this sequence (~1h 36m) looked really sketchy, but it worked just the way he said it would. I rushed right on by on the left side and quickly jumped out of the water.

You can dodge them without wasting any ammo, though dodging the 2nd G-Adult in the Room of Death is the trickiest of them all. G-Adults also do not climb platforms at all, which also includes their spawn. This can be used to evade and bait the 3rd and 4th G-Adult into submerging themselves on the way back out of the room.

There's really no need to do that. You can safely back up (walking) while staying in the water with the g. After it finishes its swimming animation, run by. Doesn't matter which side. This also works for the 2nd scenario as the zombie on the platform near the exit ladder is too slow to get you even if you take your time.

Any speedrun that is on patch 1.02 or later (the early releases had sewer skip glitches).
