RE5 and RE6 are random zombie shooters L4D style with the name Resident Evil (but L4D 1 and 2 are better than RE5 and 6).
^this
RE is more about you exploring, going back and forth through the areas and finding things, puzzles, understanding and solving them while you try to survive (and a more true experience of how the RE series started you will get plaing at the hardest difficulty where you have less ammo and really have to take care of what you kill, how and take car of your HP and health items where 1 enemy when you are almost out of ammo and no medikits could be a serious problem to you.
A game genre dont need to appeal to everyone to be good.
Pro tip: Play with the lights off and headphones on next time.
One problem with your post is you didn't describe what you were hoping for or disliked.
Are you looking for a scary game? If so perhaps Alien Isolation, Amnesia, Fatal Frame, or Silent Hill might be more your taste.
Are you looking for heavy gameplay? State of Decay 1 & 2 might be what you are looking for.
Do you want a more immersive and harder game with a mix of action and consequence? ZombiU. You might also like the original Dead Rising. Dying Light can be appealing, too, if you don't intentionally try to become OP otherwise it can be very boring.
Perhaps this isn't a genre that appeals to you.
The main reason I enjoy them, is because even though it's not the best, I do enjoy the horror story elements these games present. It's also why I like Silent Hill, The Evil Within, Dead Space and so on. I've never been scared or nervous with these games. They're just fun (Imo) for what they are.
All that said, all least you're willing to give them a try and not just outright hate them.
Still, I think he would find even Dead Space to be boring as it is not a gallery shooter either like Halo or CoD where you fire at several enemies on screem from a stand position (what can, in parts, be done at RE4, RE5 and RE6), so none of these games would be the combination of scary + fun (or not boring) for him.
