Break line of sight.
Stop running and slamming open doors as this makes noise.
Stop shooting your guns as this makes noise.
Stun the tyrant.
Do any of these options and you'll get Mr.X off you quickly but only resort to the stun option as a last ditch effort if all the others failed.

eventually he won't chase you, but he will appear sometimes.

The Tyrant chases you for around 5-10% of total playtime. So, no, don't worry about it always being around.

After I break line of sight, can i just stand still and wait for him to go away and how do you know he's gone for sure? Is it when you stop hearing his footsteps because I stopped hearing them for a little bit but they came back(I think it was because i was running and slamming doors)?

The Tyrant usually breaks aggro if you switch about 2 rooms away from him. For example, when he lifts the helicopter, bring him outside, bait him to run around him (it's easier than it sounds), and go back in. Go in the main hall (walking through doors to avoid slamming) and he'll be un-aggro'd.

If he's unaggro'd, he will usually go back to the main hall and walk around down there. You shouldn't really be scared of him to be honest, he's only fast if he has a straight line towards you (no obstacles) or if you shoot him, otherwise he just walks.

Just don't shoot him, don't hesitate to make detours to go where you need to, and avoid licker rooms (Avoid licker = you should walk to avoid making sound, but avoiding Mr.X = you should run so you will make sound. Those rooms are really annoying)

There's a few rooms where he actually cannot enter, also. Including :
(As Claire) the chief's office with the heart key, Interrogation/Observation rooms, Clock Tower room, STARS Office, the Darkroom safe room, (As Leon) the Boiler room safe room

As said before, the Tyrant is there for really short portions overall. Just run. You can shoot zombies or lickers but do note he'll come in soon enough, so don't stay there.

"can i just stand still and wait for him to go away and how do you know he's gone for sure?"
He might come towards you either way if you're not in a safe room so, no. The footsteps are an ok indication to where he is, the more you know about the map.

Hearing muffled footsteps means Tyrant is currently paroling an adjacent room. Hearing clear footsteps mean Tyrant is in the same room as you. Hearing the music means Tyrant is in "active pursuit" mode towards you (as in, directly trying to close distance and give it to ya).

There's something else to be aware of.

Some areas are considered multiple "rooms" although they are openly connected and not separated by a door, so you may think they are the same room. A few examples include...

The main hall, as well as the Reception and East wing hallway.

The East hallway on the second floor (the one the Helicopter crashes through) with the shutter. This only matters with Leon as only he can open that shutter, but even after the fact the game treats it as two separate "rooms" (at least regarding this).

Rooms that span several floors, however, are still considered the same room (for example, if you're on the second floor of the R.P.D. main hall and Tyrant is on either the first or third, you will hear the footsteps clearly).

There may be another case like this, specifically the hallway on the West half outside the dark room save room that has stairs that span across three floors (as well as the room on the third floor that has an "improvised" permanent opening between it and the hallway), but offhand I'm not 100% sure on that one. Am guessing the "hallway" is one room and the room is separate.

Learning these will help avoid confusion if you use the sound of his footsteps in your planning, though. It's easy to think that if you hear muffled footsteps, you're a bit safe, and that the sound of a door opening will alert you that it is possibly entering the room you're in, but sometimes... you don't get that warning due to some of these situations.

I will note that he sometimes seems to cheat. I went into a room once as Claire and was in the hallway through the other door in the room. The door was locked so he couldn't come through but he still locked onto her location and began taking the long way around to get to her.

The most annoying part about him is when you are hiding in the darkroom. It's hard to tell where he is from his footsteps since he could be on the same floor or one of the higher ones.

If you have directional sound you can tell where he is easily, you have no idea how useful that tech is until you've first used it and wondered how you got by playing games without it for so long.

I do have directional sound (5.1 speakers FTW). But directional sound is only on a 2D plane as a rule. It can't tell you if something is above or below you. So maybe Tyrant is stomping around the hallways near the darkroom, or maybe he's up on the 2nd or 3rd floor.
