How linear is the game?
Are there sidequests / optional locations / hidden items / rewarding exploration / choices and consequences / different endings, or does it always play out the same?

Some extra items are tied to exploration. If you take your time to explore, you will get some extra supplies and weapon upgrades that aren't mandatory to beat the game but will make things a bit easier. Might not be allways worth the effort though.

without a guide, on your first run, you'll probably get lost in the RPD a few times. if you turn off the HUD completely you'll heave to really look for items too. it's fun :)
some hidden items, but basically no to all your questions though

There are two hidden goodies (revealed by the same camera roll), but otherwise no. There are only the usual collectables and some internal achievements.

I have a feeling the OP is an RPG kind of player, that's not a knock either I enjoy a good RPG every now and then but I'm not gonna expect the kind of things OP's asking for in every single game.

"Is this a generic modern AAA title?"

Yea its a bit lack luster for paying 60$ or even 30$, I'm questioning weather or not getting DOOM for 7$ because it would be just as stale, however after someone suggested PREY & I noticed its only 8$ I'm like sure lets just grab both even if DOOMs gameplay loop is cringe Prey looks to have an almost Deadspace Feel with less horror & more tactical gameplay aspect to it so I'd find it much more enjoyable over the weak offering RE2 has...

RE2 has 2 major weak points that I cannot forgive, poor enemy roaster, no frogs/hunters/spiders/crows/other classic enemies as filters.

& s stated above no explorationable areas such as walls & floors to knockdown to let more enemies into the station to find hidden caches/collectionables, as well no interactable enviroments like pushing/breaking chairs/doors/tables way to static.

& of course spongy zombies which don't die in 3 headshots, the lack of a proper headshot bonus is offputting but can be fixed easy enough but editing damage somehow.

No amount of damage editing will help you, the game as an artifical difficulty and it WILL reset you back to your proper stats once it detects them.

007 Nightfire/Underfire/Everything or Nothing, Halo 2, Resident Evil 0, & 4, were the main shooter titles I grewup with, then deadspace1-3, (Resident Evil 5-6 & Rev2) Halo 3 & Reach, Fallout 3, NV, Dead Island & Raising, I've Played Halo 4 & 5's campaign once each, & have Fallout 4 on Steam.

I currently have around 700games played on Apex Legends & only about 150kills, Then Quit Playing.

Edit Guess Mass Effect 1-3 Counted... Hey I forgot Crysis 2 it was fun too, lol forget gears of war1-3 but those games sucked, I guess Far Cry 4 was decent, I sort of play a bit of Far Cry 4 too not much & got bored, I think Devil May Cry 1-3 was more a hack slash game, suffering ties that bind was great, Fear 3 was bad trash game. to many games, Bioshock 2 was okayish, Lost Planet was trash sadly.

I don't really count anything from n64/Earlier but I have played Re1-3 & RE Survivor, I don't have much time on Golden Eye, these hardly count anyways.

I actually never played the black ops 1-2's campaign but borrowed them to use their zombies modes.

I don't even like fps games, more into RPG titles, Star Ocean 3+4 Valkyrie Profile 2, Legends of Dragoon, FF1-6 never played 7 I did like the Cerberus spinoff it was odd tho, have played Lightnings Saga titles(A few of the NDS titles I can't recall but had Van & such Characters), Fire Emblems good, but Mainly Morrowind & Skyrim were my favorites, 1st Dragon Age was good 2 not so much & 3 was pretty meh.

I'm very causal I suppose the only shooters I like are horror/alien & hitechy games.
However Doom doesn't really fit that role its a bit stale & streamlined, I played some of Doom 3 it was decent but only had it a day or so, never fully played it.

I don't understand the appeal of actual war games either 007 is the closet game meets real life combat action game I've ever liked, & played for more than a few secs.

I've played so many games I can't even recall most of them but can be fairly certain all war related fps title blow hard & I can't play them for more than 30mins & have always sucked at their multiplayer.

Anyways got side tracked, lets just say after playing countless games I've gained highly refined tastes & know when a games good or bad, I don't play games that can't keep my interest or have weak gameplay on top on a lacking plot, so Doom just does make the cut, Prey looks decent enough tho so I've be getting that one for sure at 8$ why not.

As far as this game goes I've still waiting for it to drop to 20$ with added decent modding support, sure sure naked characters are great but I was hoping for giant spiders & hunters by now from modders atleast a few ripped monsters from older titles but I guess that was asking to much.

A map editor would have been cool, needs destructible/environmentals too.

The issue with any direct remake is its wasting my time rehashing an old story & without any new gimmicks doesn't hold my interest since the combat is lacking because the enemy roaster is lacking.

It's not linear but it isn't a "free roaming" open world neither.
Less linear than RE5 or RE6 for example, but it's not an open world. We could call it radial, and the exploration is more vertical than horizontal, something like Dark Souls but on a much less scale, there are some points of no return too, for example when you leave the police station you can't return until you find a lift that act as a shortcut and when you go to the last zone you cannot return to the zone before or the police station.
