Not really connected, but not completely disconnected either. What you should know is that the missing brother Claire comes looking for in RE2 was a survivor of the events of RE1 two months ago. That doesn't have any significant impact on RE2 plot anyway.

Every numbered RE game (except for Zero) is a standalone story that needs zero background knowledge.

There is a story connecting most games. But christ is it convoluted as ♥♥♥♥. And completely ridiculous.

Basicly boils down to. A betrays B, B betrays C because A betrayed them. D joins in as enemy but ends up being ally in fact because A are a triple agent.

Well... I'm a simplifying here but its like a ♥♥♥♥♥♥ up version of monopoly.

I have only played RE 7, which from what I understand is somewhat of a departure from the rest of the series. Will I find anything remotely familiar in this game?

Yes, the game mechanics. RE2 reuses most of the underlying gameplay logic from RE7, although they toned it down (a lot).
Story-wise, no, no real connections.

Which one do you personally prefer?

Well, the originals sure have an insanely over the top story. But, that exactly what makes it charm. You'll probably will be left scratching your head by the end of it BUT you will want more.

RE2Re. One of the biggest changes is that the game now rounds damage to the nearest full number (or .5 in some cases). This makes combat a LOT more consistent as you are not fighting in a system where enemies can have 0.0000387 HP and live (happened to me in RE7). It also means that weapons act a lot more predictable, even the grenade launcher, which is an RNG roulette.
Furthermore, the enemy HP range is usually tighter. Fat moldeds in RE7 have a range of 3000–24,000 HP. You either literally memorise every single one or just wing it.

But the most important thing is that RE2 has its difficulty adjustment in the 70-120% damage range. RE7 is 50-240%. This yet again means that generally fighting the same enemy at the same point of the game yields very similar results.

On the other hand, melee combat in RE7 is a lot more dependable, ironically (even though melee in a first-person game is usually terrible). I also love its bonus item system but not its inventory (items are too big for my taste).

Story-wise, RE2. Ethan is one of the most boring RE characters ever and RE2Re has a lot fewer glaring plot holes than RE7.

Lmao the story in resident evil. What a bad joke.

There is a story in RE, whether you want to call it that or not. However none of the RE games require pre-knowledge to have "I didn't get that" moments.
There are certain texts and items in the world, that are connected to other RE games and some of the characters have a background, that was somewhat explained in the previous games, but you will not realize that, unless you played other RE games.

To sum it up.... no need to worry. If this is your first RE game, then you will not notice anything that would make you think, that you are missing knowledge to understand any of this game.

Sometimes they do. The original RE2 has mentions of the mansion incident and what Chris and the others had been investigating, and why they vanished. RECV has to be played after RE1 because otherwise you wouldn't understand who Wesker is and what's his story with Chris. RE5 expands on the Spencer-Marcus lore from RE0 and the Progenitor virus, and also has small refferences to the events of RE3 and RE4 that you wouldn't catch if you skipped those games. RE6 has major plot connections to the events of RE2 and RE5. RER2 is heavily connected to RE5, especially with Lost in Nightmares.

Nope. I know someone who started with 5 and finished the game having absolutely zero idea of what was going on or who Wesker and Jill were.

Not that i like that garbage game though.

Both of those are explained several times in Chris' flashback scenes and conversations with Sheva.

I am about an hour into the game. Definitely feels similar to RE 7. The perspectives are obviously different, but the look of the graphics is instantly recognisable. It's almost like when you read another comic drawn by the same artist. I think I'm gonna enjoy this.
