confused about angering the gods
I know you can anger the gods by just destroying the holy mountains yourself, but sometimes enemies destroy it and the gods get angry at you. Does anyone know the exact criteria for this? If they destroy the terrain while chasing you does it count? I haven't tested this much for myself but I'd like to know how to avoid fighting the skeleton dude when im underprepared

As far as I know, if the game detects the holy mountain is being destroyed, regardless of player or enemy, it'll trigger the anger of the gods. What you can try and do is running away from any creature that can destroy the holy mountain until you lose aggro. Then you can probably enter a portal. Otherwise it'll try to get to you and will anger the gods in the process.

Here's a graphic that shows information and the layout of the trigger/boundary lines for angering the gods, editing wands, collapsing the temple, and moving things out of the shop to make them free:

I think i get it now! i was asking about the outside of the holy mountain but i think the thing that was making the gods angry was things like worms digging too deep. I thought the problem was something about the surface of the holy mountain entrance being destroyed

Yes, most often it's worms digging down into the holy mountains. There is no risk of angering the gods anywhere else but those boundary lines around the holy mountain itself.
You should try to learn how to deal with Steve. You can go to the far left side of the holy mountain, stand behind the statue, then kick it into Steve's face for an instant trick kill. Or just carry a tablet with you. He becomes a good, semi-reliable source of early game gold. Just be careful with angering the God's too early in the run, otherwise you have to deal with his big brother.
