LOL ok so like..uhhh what are the strategies? i know the game super well at this point in terms of surviving, wands, various spells etc, but I can't *actually* ever make progress and any boss seems totally impossible. I know the trick with the emerald scroll thing to get gold, but beyond that I don't know any other tricks. I don't really use mods

You should check out the workshop and install some mods that seem interesting. The base Noita experience can be very frustrating due to the amount of RNG involved in getting a run started.

If you don't want to change the game very much just install the mod that lets you start runs with "Tinker with Wands Everywhere". Learning what spells do and how to make good wands is much easier if you can just try stuff out on the spot.

There's no harm in using some mods to make things easier if that would be more fun.

If you are gonna do that I recommend some tweaks.
After getting the earth stone go to the edge of the desert where it meets the dirt. Then move a screen and a half to your left, equip the earth stone and kick/cast earthquake your way down to the orb room, it's the one across the lava lake and chasm. (Make sure to fly up and down to turn the earth-quaked material into soil so it condenses down) Collect the orb, then fly over to the pool of water on the left of the orb room, do not pass the boundary where orb room turns into red rock or you will summon the chasm boss. Now repeat the process of quaking your way down and you will come out in the chasm (that wall of the chasm curves inward a little further down.)

Once you are in the chasm fly over to the left hand wall and go down it until you hear the background music change (that means there is an orb nearby) This part is a little dangerous. Get close to the wall and kick a few times with your earth stone out then move away from the wall so stuff falling from above doesn't hit you. Repeat until you see an open cave with the orb in it. (This is under the lava lake). If you have penetrated far enough in that the soil circle created by your stone reaches the outer wall then you missed the right spot, try moving down some more.

Once you've gained that orb return to the surface the same way you came in. Proceed to the tree. I like to pick up the wriggling egg here to save it to create worm blood so I can see to get the hp+ and full health from the dark cave under the tree later. This means you won't have room to carry the evil eye until after you use your tablet to open the portal to the experimental wand. The bone devil in the room with the exp wand isn't really that hard to beat. He is melee only and has a rather slow swing, should only take about 3 bursts with the exp wand to kill him, and he drops decent gold for the surface. Just make sure to have an open wand slot before you enter b/c he can pick up any wands you drop, and if he does it can get pretty hairy. You can also swap spells in your wands while you're in that room (like in the holy mountain), though it stops working after the first time you leave. Finish up and head back east to pick up the evil eye. Now you can turn terrain into dirt and then use the evil eye to evaporate it (much safer than quaking your way through stuff).

After you get back to the other side of the tree I recommend making a little basin to catch blood and tossing your worm egg to spawn a worm, and killing it with your new exp wand. You'll want to have a wand that can mulch corpses and make more blood (spark bolt, triple shot, the energy sphere, chainsaw drill, etc) Dump your water temporarily and collect some worm blood. Dig your way under the tree to the dark cave and empty the water from it by digging through the bottom. While it drains you can clear some of the area to the east (depending on how much health you still have left from your surface travels) After the water drains drink the worm blood so you can see, and collect the hp+ and full life, one should be near the top and the other near the bottom (which spot they are in is random). If you are still good on HP you might want to just dig your way straight to the full health and leave a path open so you can find your way back in the dark later (you won't be able to see yourself in the dark unless you have the evil eye out, but it doesn't light anything else up) Don't forget to fill your flask back up with water! I usually don't bother with the long trek back across the desert to get the 250k ish gold until I'm ready to go to a parallel world. Congragulations you now have at least 225 hp and a wand that can easily kill anything on the first couple of floors (except mechanical enemies) This should give you a very good starting position to learn the game (though as Percussigant said it takes quite a while to do)

Ok, I'm gonna give you ultimate weapon: swift wand in under an hour. (sorry for bad english)
Ok, after you got earth stone and evil eye head to pyramid and dig under it from left or right. Here you have two ways: you can slowly dig trough the stone for about quarter to half of hour on the border of the desert under the pyramide or you can try to go trough biome evading hisi. Your goal is altar with the orb in the middle of bottom part of desert (not really, but pretty much). Then you need to alline yourself with any side border of altar as good as you can and dig STRAIT down. Cursed rock has aura of damage around it, but it doesn't hits you on the edge of chunk. On the other hand altar is pretty much the only thing that can show you the border. Here you'll find portal to thee surface and thing like with earth eccence but with wands. In and out, enemies here are extreamly deadly. That's kinda hard trick, but I can do it about 9 times out of 10, so... And yeah, I think that's quite valuable knowlege, I found it out myself, explained only like two people on my language and as far as I know there aren't anybody else who knows this. With this wand you can kill even pyramid's boss for extra 25 max hp.
