Good First Rogue-Like?
so i've never really played rogue-likes but i saw this game mentioned in a GMTK video and the reviews are gushing over it. Is this game worth buying for a noob to the genre?

This isn't a roguelike (those are grid and turn-based RPGs), and maybe not. This game is pretty harsh and relatively slow. It doesn't really have the "let's do a few quick runs" many other roguelites (aka action-roguelikes) do.

If you want a game that really leaves it up to you to figure anything out, that's more like a really unfriendly puzzle game than a quick shooter, then maybe you'd like this. Maybe check out some reviews to be sure?

I think roguelike is not a rigid description of a genre anymore. It's more of an overall game structure style. I think Noita has all the hallmarks of a classic roguelike. It's a somewhat procedural dungeon crawler, with randomized loot, one life, and little carryover to subsequent new game runs. Yes, it's a side scrolling platformer/shooter, but that doesn't disqualify it from being a roguelike. Anyway, so are my two cents on the topic. Not that it matters. Roguelikes are awesome, Noita is awesome.

as your first, i'd recommend binding of isaac or FTL. noita is kinda rough as an intro to a genre/style

I'd agree that it's a roguelike too. However I just got it recently and I'm having trouble finding "the point". OP, I'd personally recommend starting with The Binding of Isaac, simple to learn with a lot of depth if you want to keep at it and after a short while you'll sort of get a feel for how progression works in that.
All of that is not to say this game doesn't have fun or challenging mechanics.

Is Noita "a Rogue-like game"? No.

Does Noita "have Rogue-like elements" - some, yes.

Noita's a side-scrolling spell-zapping exploration game, with an engine that considers action in every pixel, so when/if part of the landscape gets blasted, it falls, burns, and otherwise transforms in glorious ways.

I couldn't get into binding of Isaac, op. If that one doesn't do it for you, try dead cells or enter the gungeon. Maybe ror 2 or hades. I really enjoyed curse of the dead gods. It was hard as hell, and it was my first roguelike. Noita is tough too, but I wouldn't let that stop you if you dig the vibe.

People aren't exaggerating when they say this game is very difficult. Most people play Noita for 50-100 hours before they get their first win. You will die. A lot. If you're not cool with starting over from square one constantly this game probably isn't for you.

if you can accept that aspect of the game you'll probably find Noita very rewarding to play. As a new player you'll struggle to get runs off the ground for a while, but once you do it sure does feel great to vaporize whatever killed you last run.

Just to be clear Noita doesn't have any kind of meta-progression. You can unlock more spells but that just gives them a chance to appear during future runs. Nothing carries over between runs.

If you'd rather play something more friendly I'd suggest checking out Dead Cells, Hades or Gunfire Reborn.

I'd recommend Hades personally. Better introduction, some meta-progression, nice dialogue/story to boot. Noita is great but Hades is probably the best roguelite I've played.

if your looking to "try" and blow some steam off, or you making steam this is the game for you.(by the way this is a joke and you do not blow off steam but still fun game)

You mean, it's not hard if you luck out and get super-great wand/spell combos and immunities early?

Well, there are players that have near 100% success rate on their runs. Being lucky is one thing, knowing the game inside out is the other.

I'm in an abusive relationship with Noita, its hard, i#m sure it hates me, but i can't stop playing. Its absolutly not a game for newbs, it's just too frustrating. it is however an excellent game. just one that hates gamers.

Ok, that's impressive, though it seems to me like that's a completely different observation from what Caramel_Clown wrote.
