Best thing you can do is probably putting them on a spell triggered by another spell so you don't have to be near them when they appear.
On the other hand, slice does amazing damage to certain, very dangerous things that would otherwise be very resistant or immune to most of your other shots.
Orbiting saws are not there for suicide. That's what omega sawblades are for.
honestly cant imagine a way to make that modifier not kill me, i love the orbiting fire but even that one and its relative safety sets me on fire every few seconds
giga sawblades are still kind of dangerous but will be less likely to slam into you
omega sawblades will sit there in the air, a short distance away from you
The crux is the modifier shouldn't be on any projectile that starts close to yourself, or on a projectile that can bounce back to you. Really, the same rules apply as for a harmful static projectile spell.
However, you can find a Homing modifier, that either forces the sawblade to deviate from its boomerang trajectory, or to force it go where you're aiming, which prevents it from coming back. Aiming Arc modifier is extremely good for that purpose, despite being otherwise very difficult to exploit meaningfully, as it forces the projectile to keep going away from you.
Sawblades are high-risk high reward spell, and orbits in general are intended as triggered effect, and you can create permanent traps by applying orbit modifiers to persistent objects like explosive crates or summoned rocks.
Don't put Saw Orbit on glittering field, though...

I kept playing with this combo despite being at 100/400hp. Replaced short-range homing with regular homing & added heavy shot. Kept all the sawblades in roughly the same spot & 1-tapped the alchemist later on :)
I try to avoid duck & cover reliant wands unless it's got limited charges. It works for a while, but chip damage adds up. Or make one mistake and you're toast.
