Worm Crystal?
I've never seen it before until tonight, and I've manged to destroy 2, one intentionally, one accidentally.

I destroyed it and it gave me something along these lines:
"WORM CRYSTAL DESTROYED
-You feel a little less safe-"

So what happens? I didn't notice anything sinister (besides a possibly coincidential rumbling) and I didn't notice anything good.
Does it repel worms, or prevent them from digging in the shop?

It seals them away. You don't want to break all of them.

I have a suspicion that the crystal repels worms. You broke it, and now you feel a little less safe in the store. I think

The crystal was added underneath the shop to try and prevent worms from ruining the stonework and angering the gods for you. The "you feel a little less safe" message is to indicate that this thing is supposed to protect you. It puts up a field that pushes worms away when they try to wiggle their way into the holy mountain.

I first learned about the crystal when a worm came flying straight through the crystal chamber and tore its way further up into the mountain, angering the gods and summoning the guardian.

So, uh... The technology's still got a few kinks in it, to say the least.

I first learned about it when I read the patch notes the game put up in front of my face when I opened it the day they added the crystal.

Which said, helpfully; "The gods have less reason to be angry", and described nothing about how this was supposed to be achieved by placing a worm-repelling crystal in an isolated chamber underneath the holy mountain shop.

I mean, it was obvious that's what was happening when seeing the crystal's name, the crystal destruction text, and putting two and two together... But the patch notes didn't say it as such.
