Ive been aware of a lot of the game's secrets for a while, but I have never gotten even close to a run that could get any of them. is there something im missing or do you just need to be extremly lucky?

I think most of them are out of the main path and somewhere else in the map. You sort of need to get lucky with spells to be able to venture back upwards or anywhere that isnt down. Youll definitely have to think ahead about exploring when picking up wands and perks, like keeping wands that can dig through the hardest materials or getting things that provide night vision.

Dont feel like you're doing something wrong though, a lot of people who talk about the games secrets are also people who cheat via save file cloning lol

Here's a list of things to do that sets you up for an easy start with a lot of freedom and power. Think of it as a kind of easy-mode start with the only downside being taking a while to set up. A few spoilers ahead:

  1. Start with a decent rock-digging spell (TNT, Magic Missile, Firebolt) or just find one in the caves.
  2. Use the spell to get on top of the mountain and use it again to get the stuff above the mountain. You can sacrifice the tablet for a bit of starting cash if you wish.
  3. Travel east through the desert and grab the stuff on top of the pyramid. Take the tablet with you.
  4. Keep traveling east until you hit the edge and then travel upwards until you reach the ??? room.
  5. Dig out the perk inside and grab it, then bring it to the Essence Eater (a small hovering orb) you passed on the way here. Destroy the orb and receive the Earth Stone. This thing turns all materials in a zone around you into the ground material for easy digging. Be careful with kicking as it now causes a small earthquake.
  6. Travel all the way back over the mountain and continue west until you reach the great tree. Here you can pull out the Earth Stone to create small ledges to stand on that lets you get up and around it. No need to use your quaking kick. Don't spend too much time here or you might run into the Fun Police (a group of acid spitting enemies that spawns).
  7. Jump down from the tree and head west while looking for the Evil Eye. It'll be on a pedestal but it might be covered in packed snow. This item burns away soft materials and liquids (among other uses) and pairs well with the Earth Stone.
  8. Continue west until you reach the lake and a small wooden cabin. Watch out for enemies you might meet along the way and especially avoid the area below the hanging bridge.
  9. Throw the emerald tablet your brought with you into the hut to create a portal leading to the small vault directly below you. A powerful wand, a bit better than those found in the fungal cavern west of the coal mines, can be found inside but so can a powerful enemy.
  10. Jump inside the portal, quickly grab the wand, and then either fight the enemy or leave through the other portal. If you choose to fight then try to stay above the enemy so it can't hit you. Remember you can also use the Earth Stone to remove the metal around the vault.
  11. Now you're free to travel back to the starting area (no need to scale the tree again, just dig through it with your stone and eye) and continue on as you please. Watch out for the acid spitting enemies on your way back. Wouldn't want to die too quickly after all that work.

Having done all that, you only have to focus on finding good offense and utility wands/spells since you're covered on the digging front (for a while). Just be careful not to turn nearby explosives into ground as they'll blow up in your face. This also means you can dig out of the Holy Mountains without disabling the wand editing effect it gives you while you're there, allowing you to bring back wands with good spells for editing. The earthquake that happens when you leave through the right side is what disables it. Just watch out for Steve. He doesn't like that.

Before long you'll want to go get the Greek letter spells that allow you to infinitely cast other spells (like healing or black holes) but that's another spoiler. Also try to get as many health-ups as you can find. There are a lot of them out there and once you reach critical mass you'll be practically invincible as long as you don't get polymorphed.

Hope it helps.

I do not recommend doing something like this unless you are very good at the game. Imagine spending 30 minutes to set up your game just to die in the Coal Pits or something like that. Would be infuriating.

I guess you're probably not getting good digging wands OP. What you want to look for is something that can dig through the Holy Mountain and Extremely Dense Rock. You have a few choices, but the easiest to set up in my opinion, are:
  • Black Hole
  • Luminous Drill
  • Matter Eater
  • Ground to Sand

For Black Holes, you need to make it fire off fast. I already made a thread talking about possible ways to do so: https://steamcommunity.com/app/881100/discussions/0/3129415222170330155/

Luminous Drill just requires fast mana charge wand and low delay / cooldown, which isn't hard to do with some multicasting on the right wand.

The modifiers are pretty straight forward. Put them on a projectiles that fly far and preferably in a straight line.

You don't need to find any more than 1 or 2 Black Holes, as long as you get it soon enough to be able to dig through all of the Holy Mountains from whatever floor you got it on and up to Snowy Depths. There's a tunnel from Snowy Depths and back up to The Mines, if you were unaware.

There's some spells in the game that allow making infinite black holes from a single spell, so even if you don't find anymore than 1, you can easily create an infinite black hole wand, provided you have the tool to reach the right location. The spells are some of the symbol spells, dropped by the Ylialkemisti.

From experience, you'll likely find either Black Hole or Luminous Drill in almost every single run. Outside of that, you need a good mobbing wand. Just play through the main floors and you'll probably get your hands on something you can use. Digging spells are something to look out for during your quest for a good damage dealing wand. It's not your top priority from the get go. Or well, that's my perspective.

It's also worth looking for a Small Teleport Bolt. There's lots of mobility in that thing.
