How to obtain brass (for alchemy)

I heard you can get it from enemy shells but these explode, there has to be a better way to get it. If anybody knows how to get brass easily that would help.

If you find a minigun tank and get it to shoot for a while, brass will pile up behind it. Don't remember it ever exploding on me. Guess you've been mistaking propane tanks for shells.
