Getting back save data from a lost game?

I don't think you can but thought I might as well ask.

I know after you save and quit a game you can copy the player, session number and world state files to retry if you die but can I do that if I've already died? Is there a spot where that information is stored or is it deleted once you die?

As far as I can tell, once you leave the game or start a new game, it immediately begins erasing the player and world files, and then replaces them with the default versions.

So no, I don't think that there is anywhere special that previous data is stored after a run.
