You're quite clearly not near the holy mountain and, as such, we either running away (bad) or not paying attention (also bad). You fell into a trap of your own making.
I've yet to have a true god run, but have come close a few times.
Quite tough, but it is what keeps me coming back.
That said, yes, the game is frustrating as ♥♥♥♥. But you wouldn't be playing it if it wasn't, would you?
The only times I've beat the game were when I lucked out and was able to make a OP wand (low-mana trigger spell + cast 5 or 6 + a row of powerful explosion spells)
along with immunity to fire, explosions, and melee.
Along with tons of health.
Plus, lucked out and not angered the gods.
That last one, anger the gods, is usually what ends my run. At no fault of my own I might add. They need to tweek that.
yes the game is difficult, and yes RNG plays a large role in its difficulty, but there is another common factor somewhere along the line, and that's you
whether it's inattentiveness, bravado or lack of commonsense, half of these run-ending incidents are probably of your own making, not the game's
If a mod makes the game easier then it's no better than a cheat.
