I don't know what the purpose is, someone might. I intend on finding out on my own though, rather than spoil the surprise.
I can tell you though that the Emerald/Smaragdine Tablet was a fabled tablet that alchemists believed to hold the recipe for the philosopher's stone, a chemical that could turn metals to gold and grant immortality.
Thanks for the answer BBlaze! I had googled the Tabula Smaragdina too and saw that it had some history behind it.
Will go further down in the game and try and discover its use :)
Above the entrance to the cave, where you spawn, is a snowy mountain. Floating above it is an emerald platform that will turn the tablets to gold if they are placed upon it. Quite fitting!
There is a perk that does this, but there are easier ways to cross it.
