So I went left at the start and found an egg.

I went left at the start, the 1st time I had to go through and up an underwater tunnel, there was something there but some sort of acid worm killed me. I went back on my new game but the tunnel is blocked. but I flew up and there was a nest with an egg, took the egg and got attacked by floating eyes that fire acid bomb, have got back to the right and into mine but not sure what to do with the egg?

The water tunnel didn't have any enemies for me, but there's a scroll text thing that says something along the lines of self sacrifice in the pursuit of knowledge is the most noble thing, which made sense when going back through the tunnel kills you by drowning. The egg wasn't defended for me and seems to just be a throwable item that spawns an acid worm, which may have been what killed you in the tunnel.

The left side is also random apparently and short-cuts, like the lava lake.

I got the egg to work, and yes it was an acid worm, burrows through anything fast but changes direction randomly, it also kills all enemies in it's path. It actually burrowed to the end portal for the level for me so was very handy. Just stay out of it's way.
