It is not that necessary.

The anime only covers the basics and doesn't cover the big things. the game has a glossary where you can get some lore dump and info. If you really want to know absolutely everything then you need to play the Gacha up to around arc 3 (Chapter 100+/-) because they do mention specific characters in this game (Mikaboshi) that only reveal themselves at that arc which leads to believe that this game takes place somewhere in arc3.

This is a self contained side story in the Granblue Fantasy universe and you can still play this game without knowing everything.

I just want the basics, so, main character and their backstory. Is that covered in the glossary?

The basics is "covered" in this game. Like a few lines.

Blue haired girl was an experiment. A female knight betrayed her nation to take her out to see the world. You saved her one day and died doing so. She linked her life with yours. You found a party and started sailing to wherever plot island that you will never reach because this is a gacha game.

Then each party member has a Fate Episode, whose prologue describes how they started journeying with you.

I had 0 exposure to Granblue Fantasy aside from its existence (I'm not into versus games or gacha games) and I followed the plot fine.

you are fine with just the Fate Episode in game

I've watched none of the anime, never played the gacha and only osmosed some lore from the fighting games and I didn't have any trouble following along with the story, the characters or the setting.

I mentioned this elsewhere, but while the anime is merely OK at best, I do believe it can potentially increase your enjoyment of the game.

Season 1 of the "Granblue Fantasy: The Animation" does a good job of introducing you to the characters and how they met. The first seven episodes are currently available to watch on Youtube, courtesy of Cygames. The remaining episodes can be streamed elsewhere. Episode 8 is more or less a filler episode, which is probably why Cygames only put the first seven on Youtube. Episodes 9 through 11 are worth watching if you enjoyed the first seven episodes, however. Episode 12 is the finale for the first season, but it's disappointing by comparison as it comes across as more of a commercial for alternate characters.

If you're enjoying the game or think you'll enjoy the game, I'd recommend watching the first season of the anime. Relink does attempt to bring you up to speed, but there's an impact difference between reading a few lines summarizing an event and watching it unfold over several episodes. And even silly things like Lyria's stomach growling or Vyrn's reaction to being called a lizard make more sense or are more endearing than they otherwise might be.

I got the 12 episodes ready to go yea.. Just wasn't sure if I needed season 2 as well. Guess I'll watch season 1 and then I'll jump into the game. Thanks for the info!

One Piece has too many seasons.

The fate episodes covers the basic of the story and the characters. If you want to get to know the full depth of the game and characters, play the gacha. This is an alternate universe so you shouldnt really need to worry besides the background of each characters and their motives. Been playing the gacha since 2015 and still am a semi-competitive/dolphin player, you could say Relinks is like a side-story you can find from an event/side story of a character

Season 1 of the anime covers the beginning of the journey and the formation of the main crew. Maybe not the best anime around, but watching season 1 will elevate your experience with VS and Relink tenfold. It did in my case, knowing how it all began makes the characters feel much more at home.

It's not necessary to understand whats going on in Relink since Relink more or less start off fresh in a new region unrelated to prior event but the anime definitely give you a better idea of the overall story as well as the crew.

Edit: bro who the ♥♥♥♥ clowns a genuine question like this?

Have you read the posts by people who throw their weight around about this game? I absolutely expect that kind of reaction because anyone expecting this game to do something better immediately gets told to expect less lmfao.

I have finished the game since yesterday (on PS5). Have to say, watching the first season of the anime REALLY helped. Think I would have been clueless if I hadn't lmao. 8/10 game, had a very good time with it, so definitely recommend for people who come here looking for an answer. But check the anime first season at least to double the fun! :-)
