That's something related to an update to the Virtual Desktop that basically broke the direct Steam access to games that uses certain versions of the Unreal Engine.
Though I got to make it clear that outside of the hassle of having to open Steam/Steam VR to launch the game, there are no different between launching the game via Virtual Desktop's quick menu and doing the long way around through Steam. Even if you launch a game through the Virtual Desktop quick access menu, it will still open Steam in the background and run the game through it. (That's what got broken where the quick link doesn't open the Steam API properly anymore, hence the game instantly crashes.)
