Control Ultimate Edition

Control Ultimate Edition

Do I actually have Ultimate Edition, or just bastardized Standard?
So I got the messed up Standard Edition of Control from Humble a while ago, the one that was labeled as being Ultimate even though it actually wasn't.

I just bought their new Heroines[www.humblebundle.com] bundle, which allegedly actually includes the real Control Ultimate Edition.

I redeemed the key, expecting to finally get the proper full experience, but looking at my library, it said that new DLC was added, and I've got AWE and The Foundation listed as actual separate DLC...

Did Humble just give me the ♥♥♥♥♥♥ DLC from Standard and call it Ultimate?!?

I was under the impression that the real Ultimate edition incorporated the DLC from Standard into the game itself, and thus the DLC wouldn't actually be listed as separate things.

Did I misunderstand? What can I do to verify which version I have, exactly?

From what I read, the Ultimate Edition has some extra stuff (like bug fixes) that I wouldn't get by just having "Standard + DLC", so I'm kind of pissed off if Humble screwed me over this AGAIN...

EDIT: I just remembered seeing something about file sizes in a previous thread about this, so I looked it up:

Easy way to check is the install size. Ultimate is 42gb, regular is 50.

If I try to install the game, it says the game is 92GB, in the pop-up confirmation window... so I guess I have both?!

While trying to actually install, the download is 24GB, which Steam says will expand to 49.6GB... so it looks like it's installing the Standard version.

I'll let it install, and see if it tries to install the actual Ultimate version too after, or if it'll just stop with Standard.

This is such a mess...

I might have to contact Steam support to remove Standard from my account if it doesn't install Ultimate, but I don't know if they can even do that, if both versions share the same ID or whatever...

EDIT2: I haven't found any options for a different download, no beta branches, only one entry in my library. Guess I need to contact support.

Does anybody have any experience with this, having both versions?

Are there any distinguishing features on the main menu that can easily tell the versions apart? Here's my main menu:

How does one access the DLC, in the Standard edition vs. Ultimate edition?

When removing the base game there will be entries for "Control" and "Control Ultimate Edition". Pick the former.

When removing either DLC there will be entries for "Control - Season pass" and "Control Ultimate Edition". It'll only list the DLC you picked when confirming but you won't need to do the other as both will be gone.

The author of this thread has indicated that this post answers the original topic.

Oh, thank you!! I see it.

I think I'll open a ticket anyway, just to have a record of things in case something goes wrong, but it's nice to see both clearly listed as separate things, with the dates I got them.

Choosing to remove "Control" says it'll remove "Control Ultimate Edition", which is scary... I know the standard edition from Humble is labeled as ultimate, but I wouldn't be surprised if something messed up and I ended up losing the wrong one.

I worried about having to try and explain this mess to support... this'll make it easier.

Bonus question:

Any reason to keep the original, or is ultimate better in every way?

I'm not in a rush; I could always play the original before getting it removed, if there's a reason to do so or whatever. Once it's gone, it's gone... wouldn't be easy to get it back.

Keep in mind the support tickets disappear after a while if you're going to be using them for records and yes it should be better than the original in every way. The most notable changes I know of are DX12 support, offline support, and smaller install size.

But yeah, I agree. It's quite the mess, but it sure is quite the money maker to resell the exact same game under a different name with slightly more stuff.

Good to know, thanks.

I mostly just want it in case the wrong one gets removed from my account, so I can point to the ticket and say "give it back".

Considering both versions have the same name, and as much of a mess as this whole thing is, I wouldn't be surprised if I tried to remove Standard from my account and ended up losing Ultimate instead.

Don't care about DX12, but offline & smaller size sounds good.

As long as it's not DX12-only, I'm good. I'm still on Windows 7, and I'm just procrastinating (for years) moving to linux, so DX12 is actually a negative/hurdle, as far as I'm concerned.

It's hardly even more stuff, I think? More like barely a patch... this whole situation is such a dumpster fire.

I'm used to them trying to repackage remasters, but I've never seen a previous version get overwritten like this. It's just so sloppy.

You can restore it to your library the same way you removed it.

Don't worry. The only way to lose content without deleting your account is by either having the key revoked/reset or getting it refunded.

It's backwards compatible. No launch options though so will need to do some digging to find out how to switch.

Well, in most cases there is new content. Not as prominent for this but at least the overall price was lower even if you have to rebuy.

It released on Steam with Ultimate. The original was added just to screw over Humble Choice subscribers. Frankly, I am kinda glad they did it like that otherwise my playtime, achievements, cloud saves, etc. would either need some work to transfer over or have to be accumulated again from scratch.

Oh! Well, that changes everything. I thought once you asked for a product to be removed, there was no way to get it back.

Thanks for putting my mind at ease.

Guess I won't bother with the headache of contacting support unless I absolutely need to, then.

Yeah, this was a strange situation.

So there was never a regular/official Standard version on Steam before Ultimate?

I thought it started with Standard + DLC, and it changed to Ultimate around the time it was in Humble Choice.

Was there no Control on Steam before that? Or was it Ultimate on Steam even before the bundle?

Correct.

Standard edition launched on epic. They didn't bother launching it here and instead launched ultimate.

Then for parity reasons so they could let people have a choice of steam key or epic key from the bundle, they added standard edition later.

They just added it in a monumentally ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ stupid way and didn't give it its own page and instead added it as a sub-key for ultimate, thus starting this entire trainwreck of misinformation and false outrage.

Thanks for the clarification.

It's actually kind of impressive, the way they managed to mess up something that should have been so simple...

It was faster and easier for them to just set it up as a sub key.

It was just monumentally stupid and has created no end of headaches for the community.

I sent a support ticket to Humble asking about the situation.

Doubt they can do anything, but I'd be curious to hear what they reply.

I'd be surprised if there was another way of dealing with this situation than removing the old version from one's account.
Paratech2008 Mar 9, 2023 @ 7:55pm
I figured it wouldn't hurt to ask....

I'm in the exact situation as the OP. Looks my best bet is to just to remove the original from my account before activating the Ultimate Edition. I was wondering if achievements would be at all affected by which version you played. Probably not, but better not to take any chances.

This is the first I knew that the standard edition didn't exist before the ultimate one. It had annoyed me previously that, as far as I could tell, the only way to get the DLC / season pass was to buy it directly through Humble, and it never seemed to go on sale. That meant I could buy the Ultimate Edition for cheaper on sale (for $10 I believe) than I could get just the season pass, which then meant getting Control at all in the Humble Monthly was pointless.

What was the reason to only give us the standard version if it didn't even technically exist on Steam? Just so we'd have to spend more money to then get the season pass from them? I'm not even sure if I should be more irked at Humble or 505 Games over this. Maybe both equally.

I've been thinking the same thing. Been waiting for a sale on Ultimate, since the season pass wasn't worth it. Worse yet because Ultimate has more bug fixes, and is an overall-better version from all I read, so even getting the season pass would have felt like a waste.

Glad it was just a "bonus" for me, since I actually cared about the other things we got that month, but I'd have have especially pissed if my main reason for getting it that month was Control.

Feels scammy. At least scummy.
