Importing save file from Epic
I got this game free from Epic and I want to buy it here on Steam while on sale then finish the game. Will my save file from Epic work?
This game is soo good and I want to add it in my Steam library. I don't want to start all over again tho.

The free version in Epic is only the standard edition, and might conflict with Steam's ultimate. and if by chance it does work your Steam achievements won't be updated. I'm in the same boat as you thinking of buying this ultimate version in Steam.

No it won't work. Since the Epic version is the Standard, the save file doesn't have the checks for the DLCs. Thus it will not work with the Steam game since the Ultimate version has the Dlcs baked into the save file.

You will have to start all over again in the Steam version.

Other commenter is wrong. You can import saves from Epic version to Steam version of the game. You can also import your preferences (options) as well.

Here is the guide I followed: https://old.reddit.com/r/controlgame/comments/ij9vq6/howto_transfer_savegames_from_egstore_to_steam/

In the post there are some mentions about limitations (they may be outdated, see below):
* When importing a save game where the main story is already completed the AWE expansion is not triggering.
* When loading up the save, all weapons and mods will be unequipped. They're not gone, just in inventory.

But there is a chance that this was fixed. Last edit of the post was in August 2020, and in the pinned thread here in Discussions which was posted in September 2020 we can read following point:
"* AWE content and opening mission will unlock properly when importing save files from the Epic Games Store version of the game."

I didn't finish main story so I can not confirm if AWE expansion is triggering (but supposedly there is a workaround), but all my weapons and mods were still equipped.
Only issue I had is that some control points were not cleared, but I could still teleport to them, so after teleporting I just cleanse them again.

Nah, I've just tried the same thing, and when I try to load the save it comes up "error loading 'Unknown DLC'" and won't start.
I'm on "My Brother's Keeper" so I'm about halfway through the story.

I successfully transferred my Epic Games saves over to Steam just this morning using the guide Ligar links to so it is possible - but I did get that 'Unknown DLC' bug you mentioned at first, Entropy. I'll tell you how I got around it but I'm really not an expert so please don't blame me if it turns your PC into an Object of Power or something.

I compulsively backed up my Epic saves (just to be safe). I also made sure that the latest save I was transferring was made outside the Central Executive control point (I read somewhere that this might be relevant, figured it wouldn't hurt).

I then completely uninstalled Control from Steam. I used Geek Uninstaller to make sure all traces were removed, and also deleted the folder '870780' in UserData which had been missed.

I turned off Steam cloud saves for this game as I wondered if there were conflicts happening after my many failed attempts to get this to work. Probably not necessary.

Then I reinstalled Control from Steam, opened it and played through the first mission to set up the 870780 folder in UserData again. (Probably not necessary to do the whole thing, but hey, it was fun).

Then I closed out of Control and followed the steps in the guide Ligar linked:

- Deleted all the files in the 870780/remote folder.

- Copied over all the files from the Epic save folder savegame-slot-00 EXCEPT meta.chunk - leave this out. (I didn't the first time and all my control points had reverted to uncleansed). I also left out expedition.chunk as it wasn't on the list in the guide, and I've had zero success with expeditions so far ;)

- I renamed them as described in the guide. Be sure to delete the '.chunk' off the end as well (ignoring any warnings).

Knock on wood, this is now working fine for me. I'm on the Polaris mission and the AWE expansion has triggered successfully.

Good luck.

ETA: Completed the base game and started the AWE DLC with no problems. Turns out my Maintenance sector is a bit bugged (enemies from the 'Old Friends' mission are reappearing, the Atlas Chamber control point is glitched, I can't access Black Rock Processing via the Atlas Chamber at all as the door's locked) but I don't think it's going to matter that much for the DLCs. Proceed with caution!

Thanks man, great to see it worked for you. I'll give it a try!
My last save WAS in central executive iirc, so that might be an issue.

Update: it worked. I didn't delete anything but all the files in 870780, I didn't copy meta.chunk and I renamed maintenance.chunk to savegame-slot-00_meta per one of the guides. Everything worked out great.
I am so glad to hear that it worked for you :D Enjoy!

Gonna try his guide. Hopefully it works. 😄

I got Control for free on Epic (just without the DLCs) and migrated my saves over to the Steam Ultimate Edition when I realised I really wanted to play the DLCs. I don't actually own the game on my own Steam account even, I have access to it on family share but it still worked just fine.

I'm not sure about other games I'm afraid, I guess the success of save migration will depend on the game...
