As a game, Alan Wake is flawed, but fun and should be experienced at least once imo.
I think the game was not good even when it came out mechanically, due to it going through development hell and being remade around year before release. The story is okay though, if you are into Stephen King kind of stuff.
That said, if you don't play it before Control, maybe play it between Control and the AWE expansion. Quantum Break also aged really well and is still a gorgeous game, and luckily on modern hardware it actually is playable with everything cranked up, so you might want to toss that into the mix too. The awkward storytelling gets in the way, but Quantum Break's combat firing on all cylinders is an absolute blast. They're both 8-10 hour games iirc. The DLC for Alan Wake is a lot of fun but there's not really any significant canon there, it's just a fun romp that doesn't take itself very seriously.
