Having good patient satisfaction contributes towards department prestige, along with staff satisfaction (which is also displayed by mousing over the same part of their staff card) and having no recent deaths. Good prestige is key for insurance objectives and obtaining the best payouts and patient numbers.
It's also worth checking the patients discomfort modifiers, by mousing over the eye with a tear icon just above the satisfaction thumb. Discomfort can heavily reduce patient satisfaction.
