Its the quake effect. The people who are good are so unbelievably good that people who are new to the game will lose 1000 out of 1000 games, guaranteed. Hell, i have like 53 hours in the game and being able to beat the worthy AI consistently means squat online.
Edit: Also, i agree with OP. The AI in this game is bad at the game, and the only reason its even halfway keeping up with the player is because of the insane advantages it has because of its cheats
At least Songs has challenges and other scenarios beside campaigns to keep you occupied.
