I honestly don't like this DLC and it has NOTHING to do with the price.
At first when I saw a "Norse" themed dlc was coming to SOC my initial reaction was shut up and take my money. Try as I might though I can't really get into it.

First off I only play single player and co-op really... SO no campaign or hell even just ONE story mission that kinda guides you through the faction and its lore is both not making me get into the faction nor helping me learn it.

I get times call for resources to go only go towards certain things... but if you can't make a campaign make ONE mission at least that keep you separate from the AI players while you learn and build up... then a trigger opens a portal or something. So you can have the first half of the mission be a story like campaign mission that basically dumps you into a skirmish.

Thats not my main gripe however.... its the "theme" of the Vanir themselves.

The faction itself is what I can't really enjoy....In games like this most factions and units have themes and they stick to them. For example Arleon has medieval humans be its basic troop type while its elite are mostly fey with the Knight being the exception. This follows a good artistic and army composition theme.

The Vanir have a few human viking style troops that evolve into animals and man I just absolutely hate it. The huskarl should form into a better huskarl and the chieftan should become a Jarl or something. Not a huskarl into a birdman and the chieftan into a mountain giant.

I am aware this is just my opinion and I am happy to contribute to the continued development of this game.... I WANT to see it do well.

I just can't stand the aesthetic / evolution choices of the army composition. Nor do I feel like their 4x settlements look as the same amount of effort went into them as other factions.

In short, moving forward.

Give us ONE mission with a lot of lore for the faction so we know WHY they fight and WHO they are and WHAT they stand for, or I am already bored. And for the love of god PLEASE make army compositions make more sense progression wise. (IMO)

Basically they need a campaign to get you into the faction. That's a fair assessment.

I'm not even sure a campaign can get me into the art style... Vikings that turn into animal / people hybrids? No thank you... Viking troops making up the core of the army while the animal hybrids make up the elite??? Or even vice versa??? Yes ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ please.

There are 2 challange maps that introduce you to the faction:
1 Sorgs journey
2 Steadfast
Second one gives you more lore about them and why they change so much.
Plus there is Go East that also has bit of lore about Vanir.

Yes. Good to see someone who knows Earth 21XX series
And you get city in Steadfast. I haven't played Go East yet.

You can get a big city in the Sorg's Journey challenge but it will take a while to get becouse you need to build your army around the map first.
In the Steadfast challenge you will have the fortress almost at the start.

Hi! Thank you for your constructive critisism. Expanding on the lore of Vanir is something we want to do, and there is definitely much more to them that this DLC can convey. I'm certain their appearance and transformations could be empathized with better together with the campaign we had in mind. We all wanted to release a campaign and it was even being worked on a few months back, but the situation of the studio simply did not allow it for this time.

Out of curiosity, what are people's thoughts on the viability of a human-centric Vanir playthrough so far? I know Jarn gets a bonus for them specifically, but I also noticed that the research upgrades for them are pretty substantial. Probably to make up for the raw stat boost of shifting them.

Not an expert in this game at all, but I have had others who play religiously say there really is no point in going a "human" build as the vykir are just better. If you are playing on one of the SUPER small maps on sudden death maybe but other than that.... it seems to not make any real sense to purposefully handicap yourself

I get you are a small team and resources are limited... please understand I am not bashing this DLC for any other reason that I WANT to enjoy and play it... and I simply don't. Please PLEASE hear me when I say moving forward you need to have at least a very long yet very slow paced SINGLE mission to dump an insane amount of lore and aesthetics on us. And the army compositions and overall strategy behind them need to make better sense than this. The upgraded Vanir army isn't vikings with norse mythology thrown in.... its a zoo. A literal zoo of animals.

Sure, fully agree with your feedback.
But $13-ish just for the one extra faction w/o the campaign is IMHO *way* out of touch. I mean, you guys also had the survey. Most people were around $6-7 IIRC. This doesn't make sense, as it stands right now...

We totally get that the survey and the pricing of Vanir seems skewed, but it feels right to point out that the survey was meant for Rise Eternal, our not yet released DLC that we put on hold. While we think it would be cool, that DLC had a single new Wielder and no new units, and those things (especially the units) are very expensive and time consuming. So while we'd love to make smaller and cheaper DLC's (and free ones too) The new factions just cost a ton more to produce!

It could very well be our bad for not communicating that good enough in the survey, so we get the bad taste it leaves!

I love it, I don't know if its 100 % viable but if I get Jarn I tend to really go for it when it comes to the human-centric Vanir style. Tons of research put into extra HP gives you a very beefy human army!

1st because people are confused by it and pull it over and over, survey was for the "tales" mini dlc, aka rise eternal, it wasn't for factions dlc that would obviously cost more. That Vanir was scaled down to be ready before Xmas is other thing.

2nd I didn't have much platime yet, but Sort the troll seems like pretty funny one challenge mission is pretty nice to meet new units one by one, so I don't know how it's gonna play out in skirmish but I am glad that vikings turn into vildra, seems like interesting concept instead of classic base game two factions mixed into one, I heard many times before that base factions feels a lot samey, glad they tried to mix up things a little.

3rd, idk how humans only Vanir are playable but seems like perfect challenge for mixed faction conquest where you can buff them with human armory buffs from 3/4 other factions on top of their own, I am gonna try that.
