Are knights bad?
What the title says. It seems like all they do is run in and die. I can't really justify taking them over another stack of say Horned ones or even just another stack of archers. They seem just very meh. Is there some kinda trick with them I'm missing? I know about the joust mechanic thing or whatever its called where the further they move the more damage they deal but I dunno, they just seem bad.

It depends in the situation. They have 50% ranged resistance

They grant your army flat damage bonus plus ranged offense

They only do that to those around them if they spend their turn doing nothing don't they?

pretty sure its the whole army no matter where they are (foot soldiers have to be near the units to grant their defensive buffs) but yes it will end their turn. But imo melee who don't have the wait skill are only useful if they can buff your ranged units. And the knights have one of the best buffs for ranged units.

It depends. I see High Legions attack on first turn regularly in our team game. Initially they have movement 4, that becomes 5 (or is it 6? I don't remember) after research, +2 movement and +30 initiative from Eager skill, sweeping attack and then no retaliation attack from research, 50% ranged resistance, it is quite fun tactics.

Just checked and yeah its only units within 1 tile. Overall the upgraded knight is okay, but I'd still rather just use Horned Ones as a melee beatstick, cheaper and harder hitting.

Horned Ones are not harder hitting lol. Like I prefer Horned Ones too (cheaper, their barracks pulls double duty, research provides crucial +initiative that humans can't get, aesthetic preference), but let's be honest about the comparison.

Compared to Knights/Fists of Order, Horned Ones/Queen's Guard have a lower base damage that equals out once they're berserk, lower (only by 1 when upgraded, admittedly) offence, and no Charger trait for an easy +50 offence. Knights are also quite a bit tougher, with a higher defence to begin with and no berserk dumpstering it, provide additional essence, and have a higher initiative. One to one, knights/fists are inarguably the better unit, but they lose out in other ways.
