Each unit has its own set of tags denoting what type of unit they are. Rana units are gonna have either the Rana creature type or Beast creature type
Arleon will be Human or Faey
Barya will be Human or Harima
Loth will be Human, Undead or a single Beast outlier in the form of the Rats
So, whatever tags they have denotes which Research buff they get. If a unit has Rana & Beast tags, it should benefit from those research types. If it doesn't. then some kind of bug's going around
It do cost a lot of resources to research both beast and rana techs as well as the unit specific ones but I guess the riders get pretty powerful at that point.
Oh, I'm not saying Rats are bad or that them not benefitting from the Loth researches is all that detrimental, just saying they're an outlier to how all the other faction units are tagged. On contrary, I personally always tend to go for Rats over Legionnaires when I'm playing Loth
The Musician tag isn't really used for anything from what I've observed while playing SoC, might be something being left for a later content expansion
Honestly, I usually tend to research the Tag specific buffs last and prioritise getting the relevant Unit specific buffs for the composition I'm running first, since they offer far more noticeable and useful buffs in my experience
I'd even go as far as saying you're not really going to need the slight edge those tag specific research buffs. The only exception being the research buffing Initiative since more of that stat on a unit is always 100% good to get
