Though, i wouldn't mind, if they'd get presented a little better. Especially Faey Queens and Hellroars could look a little more like the "big deal" they are.
I'm fine with this game having more of it's own identity and strong things to look forward to in a game, like troop research building upgrades (again, some slight visual change on troops, after research upgrades would still be cool, like fancier looking weapons if you upgrade offense) or when you play Arleon and invest mostly into Knights/Fist of Order and order-magic and turn your knight stacks into big mean choo-choo paintrains by spamming Quicken on them during combat.
I think funny thing here is that while maybe they don't look it I feel like they're the strongest of the large building units.
Dragons don't totally seem worth the effort even tho you get a Loth 4 situation where the enemy AI having lots of them feels impossible to beat without leveling up Order/Destruction for higher leveled Justice
Faey Queens are cool but I don't really go the Faey route too often
Then Legions are pretty good but yeah I guess that's the whole thing is due to the mentioned stack limits your average playing Loth is more likely to have be those magic stall builds featuring OathSingers and Necromancers with maybe some Legionaires to block the weaker units
I'd say legions feel the worst because you need to win a magic battle to even get them in range. All the others are much harder to neutralize with spells
End game units need to be better somehow since they usually take research or expensive production buildings
But if they're better in the wrong way, then they invalidate early game units, like you say.
Definitely agree on loving how Planetfall did it, by making most of the high tier units have strong support or specialized abilities that encourage you to mix them with lower tier units instead of spamming them
Absolutely, loved the AoW: PF tier 4 units and how they were used. People complained they were weak because they didnt appreciate their nuances... they just thought higher tier = better arithmetic and they are... if you know how to use them.
The other aspects is keeping low tier units relevant thoughout the game. AoW:PF did this with the mod system, Fallen Enchantress did it with upgrades.
What i really liked with fallen enchantress were the little side stories and potential chance of picking up unique units and characters through the playthough and the rare unique superunits to kill for some good goodies if one is man enough, similar to the high tier areas in AoW:PF.
