to add to that - there are shaders you can apply to pixelated art. it gives the illusion of higher resolution by blending out the blockiness that pixel artwork tends to have. but it does make things more blurry too.

the devs could in theory provide an option to apply a shader of some kind. i believe they are using Unity as the game engine - and there are a lot of shader modules that can do this within Unity.
As I said many games and devs use artificial pixel art by rendering frames of 3d models into sprites. But that does not seem to be the case with this game

yeah - the concept art is completely different. artists make those first, so when they do draw the actual piece, they have a feel for how it will look. it is purely a benchmark for style, positioning, etc..

the artist has made the in-game graphics pixel by pixel.

it is based on a canvas size, probably 64 x 64.

think of the canvas like a piece of paper, so if it is 64 x 64 you have 64 pixels along the x-axis and 64 pixels along the y-axis. all the space in-between are those numbers multiplied to each other, so in this case = 4,096 pixels.

if you increase a 64 x 64 canvas to 128 x 128 (for better resolution), you now have 16,384 pixels to work with.

however, you cannot transfer a pixel art piece from 64 x 64 onto a 128 x 128 and have it magically become higher resolution. it will paste on as a 64 x 64 asset, as it was initially drawn. so it will be tiny compared to the canvas space.

you cannot stretch it - well, you can - but it would look like a 64 x 64 asset because no new pixels are added.

you have to redraw every pixel to utilize the new canvas space. since you now have a larger canvas to work with, you can add a ton of new pixels of artwork. this allows for increased detail, shading, etc..

but you have to draw it all over again, pixel by pixel.

hope that makes sense for you.
not in this case!
this game is not drawn by pixels
this game is made from high-res sketeches that colored then decreased in size in order to pixelate
https://twitter.com/KordianRonnberg/status/1534175622972456961/photo/1 already have much higher resolution than in the game! https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FUp8l8aXEAEhJz6?format=png&name=large

No my man, this is pixel art. 100%.

Here, maybe this vid will help show you some more. It talks about how the art of this game evolved. jump to 10:13 to specifically see how a sample pixel art asset is created.

yes it is a pefect example that a high-res picture was made then it was decreased in size

It's not decreased in size. It's 2 different people who respectfuly worked on their field.

Emanu Garnheim did the rough concept art which is unusable in a polished game.
None of his sketches are animated.

Kordian Ronnberg is the pixel artist who did all the final work in pixel art by interpreting the concept art done by Garnheim. He manually worked for the visuals and didn't do it by decreasing the size of the concept arts.

"We always wanted to make a pixel game, but starting out we wanted a super high-res pixel game - which was a crazy amount of work."

They wanted high res, it was too much work. The current art style was chosen because it's cheap. Ofc that was obvious despite all the sorry simping for low res pixel art around here. Can't wait till someone has the means to produce a heroes like game with actual good looking sprites by modern standards.

Ya, I am pretty sick of pixel games. I had to deal with pixels for decades until modern computers could support better graphics. I thought I'd never had to look at those "etch-a-sketch" icons again. Now I have to deal with them all over again, "to save money".

They said it was too much work, but that also means too much money. We are willing to give them more money to create graphics similar to the ones that are shown in the non-map areas of the game (like the Wielder's pictures and such). That's an in advance DLC just asking to be bought by players with the cash already in hand.

I'm paying not for suffering eyes! :(
I'd like to pay for eyes pleasure

Then don't buy a game labeled as pixel art....
