System Shock 2: 25th Anniversary Remaster

System Shock 2: 25th Anniversary Remaster

First game gets unreal engine remastered but this doesn't
So this is equivalent to the enhanced edition version of the first system shock? What was the point of remastering the first one in unreal engine but not this??

I mean the first game also got a remaster before its unreal remake.

Exactly so what's the point of even purchasing this if they're going to do the unreal engine remake in about 5 or so years
This is an easy to use remaster with many QoL improvements like gamepad support to play the original System Shock 2 easy on many different systems.

It may or may not get a remake like the first game down the line - but the original Shock2 is definitely still worth playing today (at least it holds up much better than the original System Shock both graphically and its gameplay).

It isn't a long game - and it is definitely worth playing. Whether you play this KEX engine port Remaster, or the original release using the latest versions a dozen or so community mods to buff up the graphics a bit (although Vanilla still looks pretty good too).
If you had ever played the original SS1 you would know why it needed a full-on remake to make it approachable for today's gaming audience. SS2 on the other hand is just a slightly clunkier Bioshock - it's perfectly playable today, and while it may not look like much in the trailer its atmosphere will still draw you in to such an extent that you don't even notice the graphics anymore.

That's the thing about graphics: They only matter for _selling_ a game, not the actual playing of it.
It isn’t a ground up remake like SS1 was but it is more than a simple upscale remaster as well, I guess it’s somewhere in between.

The first game got a remaster before the remake buddy. 👍

I'm edging bets that ND will announce a full blown remake in due course.

It took ND almost 10 years to get SSR out.
SS2 is a more expansive game with more mechanics, maybe in 20 years.

Have you played the original game? If I had to pick one game to get the remake treatment, that would have been it.

I LOVED the original game back in the day, but even then I would have called it clunky. Now I would call the original release unplayable. (And yes, Enhanced edition exists, BUT that's still adaptation at best. A fresh start was vastly needed.)

System Shock 2, on the other hand, came out after we were using WASD standards which as people playing it today with and without mods proves, is STILL playable and enjoyable to this day. A remaster is nice and frankly a great excuse to get this game in the hands of console players who couldn't play before, but the game simply didn't need too much beyond that.

Edited for a single wrong word that changed everything (remaster to remake in the first paragraph)

The first game got a PORT, not a remaster. This is also not really a remaster for that matter, but they did way, way more work on this one than System Shock EE.

But there's already an enhanced edition of the first game so why remake it in unreal engine

It got both... the 2023 remake is also Nightdive. And frankly the remake was needed. Even the EE edition is adapting old clunky controls. Better to redo that one from the start.
I dont see why they would put effort into remaking the first one but then just give us a lazy update of the sequel

....the first one was in developement hell for 8 years including at least one total scrap and start again. Turned out great, but I dont blame a small team for NOT wanting to do that again.

First was game a Kickstarter remake.... not a remaster
learn the difference between the concepts of "enhanced" "remaster" and "remake" and your question is answered.
literally no one is holding a gun to your head and forcing you to buy or play any game. maybe consider just googling the difference between "remake" and "remaster" and decide (quietly) for yourself whether you want to play it or not.
sounds like you're just complaining to hear your own voice tbh.

if you really NEED a pragmatic answer to the question, this enhanced version will give everyone access to the multiplayer options of the game for co-op play, which is something that has been somewhere between hinky and non-functional for like 2 decades. for most people who have actually played this game that is enough of a clencher. not enough for you? don't pourchase, and keep it to yourlsef - or purchase it and, again, keep it to yourself. choose wisely.

not sure why everyone has to publicly air out their "i don't want/like this game :(" rhetoric over every single game in existence. consider shutting your hole instead
