But then, it all changed with Hitman 3. It became apparent all that generous support and free content was not because IO are "the good guys". It was only done for one reason and one reason only - to keep the hype around otherwise niche and unpopular game, and keep the money flowing. IO literally relied on the fans back in the days of 2016, when its episodic nature almost killed the game (even tho I personally liked it as an incentive to play every map through and through before the next one comes out).
Hitman 3 feels like IO finally getting their financial freedom in the form of Epic money bag. And it feels like they decided to enjoy that freedom to the fullest. It's like they thought it's payback time for all the good things they /had/ to do for us over the years to keep us believing.
I have only "played" Hitman 3 on Twitch, and I'm so disappointed. Not buying it until it gets on Steam, on a deep sale at that. And I'm sure not buying any of their Bond games either.
Is Hitman 3 less content that 1 and 2? Absolutely. But 1 and 2 could easily keep you busy for 500 hours a piece. They were, frankly, outliers. No other Hitman game besides those 2 had that much content. An overwhelming majority of games released in the last 5 years haven't had that much content. You could spend 80+ hours with Hitman 2016 and still not know the levels very well. That isn't "normal" - especially not for Hitman.
Hitman 3 is an excellent game, a great end to the new trilogy, and has some excellent maps. Just be aware that you'll only get a couple hundred hours of content and not a few hundred hours... apparently all these Hitman fans seem to think every Hitman title needs to surpass Skyrim in hours to be worth their money. IO gave everyone a colossal deal with Hitman 1 and 2 and now everyone is upset that H3 is mearly a "good" deal.
Hard answers time -- a lot of the "content" in Hitman 2016 and Hitman 2 was just fluff. 80% of the escalations were not interesting or more frustrating than they were worth. A majority of the unlockables did not add anything meaningful to the gameplay. Hitman 2's levels were not as engaging as those found in Hitman 1 (or 3 for that matter), and while you could spend hundreds of hours doing everything, most normal folks got fed up with the games before they hit 100 hours. Shorter, sweeter and more memorable fits Hitman 3 just fine.
How does it compare to previous installments? My 2 cents, in order:
Bloodmoney
Hitman 2016
Hitman 3
Hitman 2
Silent Assassin
Contracts
CN47
Absolution
On top of that charging extra per escalation. Hitman (2016) had 50 of them for free, Hitman 2 another 30 of them
Buying the escalations nearly doubles the price and for what? A few minutes of remixed contracts that we normally would have gotten free?
I swear if they thought they could get away with charging extra for player made contracts they would try
lol
