i suggest you watch few videos and decide then what you like more.
after testing both games i found session closer to realism and stayed with it.
for me biggest pro is the ton of different settings, after tweaking them you can decide how realistic or not the game is for you
Here's a rundown I can give you, but you should really look into videos and maybe find a way to try both out:
- Session has quite a lot of control and physics options to customize the game to your liking, all built-into it. SXL has physics options via a mod.
- Speaking of controls, both their control schemes are very similar: your right stick controls your right foot and yout left stick, the left foot. They execute them differently, though, and Session has two more control schemes, one of them pulling from EA's Skate.
- Session has two huge maps, three smaller ones, and a bonus Philly map. The plan is to connect the NYC maps as they grow and make it an open world. I could be wrong, but I think SXL has more maps if you count the community ones (released officially, so they're included in the base package).
- You can mod Session as it is, but due to the lack of official modding support, the experience isn't great. SXL has official modding support and not only are the mods easy to install, but the modding community is very dedicated. However, the devs plan to provide official modding support for Session in the future.
- As a whole, Session feels very rough if you factor in everything other than the controls and the physics (and even those aren't perfect yet). There are a lot of rough edges and the video editor doesn't even work as well as it should yet. SXL also has rough edges, but it delivers in those other aspects (the UI is very simple and intuitive, it looks good enough, the video editor is praised by the community, etc.).
In the end, they're both great skateboarding games in their own right. Some people prefer one over the other, but some like both equally and want both to succeed. It's tough to gauge which one will be worth it *for you* cuz only you can tell which one you like most after playing them. But if anything, Session is much cheaper than SXL and it does offer about the same experience, which once again, speaks volumes about how ambitious it is considering we're still in pre-alpha and it makes a game in 1.0 run for its money.
Both not only has its up and downs as of right now, but had their ups and downs since they were early betas. Like, before XL 1.0 came out, I could only play Session. Then after 1.0 came out, and getting a hang of how the mods work, I could only play XL. I'm all for realism myself, but when realism take the fun out of the game, then I lose interest. I mean, I can truly see and respect how it appeals to a lot of people, but I believe there's plenty of stuff that still needs a lot of work in Session (as expected of a game in early development stage), as of now with this new complete "re-design" of the physics also. Past bugs are still very much present (like the rubber legs when you spin out of a grind/slide and such). But I really appreciate that the creature team added advanced physics options, whereas in XL, that can only be done through a mod.
As said, Session is not even in 1.0 yet. So there is still A LOT of room for improvement, and I'm sure there will be. Like, I REALLY want it to succeed. As of now, I simply can't play it in its current state, but that's just me... I believe one really has to try both to pick one.
But common sense seems to be: Skate XL is a bit further as session but Devs abadoned.
Session will go further at the end and Devs seem way more passionated about skateboarding in general.
wut... it's Skater XL.
OP, I was a longtime Skater XL fan and thought it was going to come out on top in the end, I think it's going to be Session now though. Controls are a bit more difficult to get used to, but once you get them tricks feel more rewarding. As of right now, I say Session is hands down the better skateboarding game.
Yea, sorry. Still. ^^
