what am I not understanding about thief?
I have 0 damage output and nothing to compensate
this is the only character so weak that I die on the first floor
in a single turn while I'm rolling 4 ones and dealing 4 damage I'm getting hit with 4 poison which amounts to 10 damage

You can steal enemy items, so if you feel like your build is underpowered (which, once you pick up Crowbar, it isn't), you can beat them at their own game!

That's in Reunion. This seems to be talking about the base game.

Even in the base game, you steal an enemy item each turn.

yes and if it's the wrong item I don't deal damage that turn
it's worse than just having a dedicated item that I want

I don't understand how you die on the first turn.
You have an infinite-use Dagger, and you can use enemy equipment.
Can you, like, show some screenshots, and explain what's going on?

no I can use the exact same game they have
except there are more of them than there are of me and I can't choose what I steal
and a wolf that's resistant to poison giving me poison attacks is not helpful
furthermore a kraken's overwhelm keeps getting stronger for the kraken but every time I regain the move the damage counter is reset

first FLOOR
it's only happened twice but that's twice more than with any other character

obviously this screenshot doesn't show me dying but I find dealing 5 damage and doing nothing else pretty atypical at this stage of the game for any other class, and frankly had the wolf prioritized fury before its other attack the turn after this I would be at 7 health
unlucky roll does a whopping 4 damage, which I find to be the weakest of any of the class abilities

at the start of floor two I start the match off by dealing 12 damage, which is fine, and then this following turn I have ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ to do, I can take 2 damage in exchange for dealing 2, and pump out a total of 7 over the turn, which is less than what the pirate will have just done to me
then the pirate claps back with 9 damage
my options are deal small amounts of damage or deal slightly less small amounts of damage and also take some damage. at the end of this fight I'm at less than half health and it's my first enemy since levelling up
even with me having armor reducing 1 damage per attack the marshmallow can still deal 9 damage to me and inflict two status effects in a single turn

I don't even know how the crowbar is supposed to be helpful, I never have more than one thing it applies to so it sort of defeats the purpose of having it

so far my only win comes from having found an upgraded glass cauldron as a swap for the pea shooter, it sure does neuter the enemy

How did you even get into this situation? It looks like you rolled a 5 and a 6, which admittedly isn't great, bumped the 6... then split the 6. Which is the bad choice in that situation. Your expected damage is better if you split the 5 (you either do 1 damage or 5 damage, expected damage = 3) than the 6 (you either do 1 damage (40%), 2 damage (40%), or 6 damage (20%), expected damage = 2.4). So that's already a suboptimal move. Even better, you could have split the 5, put the 6 and the higher result into Woof Woof Woof, and bumped the remaining dice to get even better value.

On this turn, you can touch the burning dice, activate your limit break, split one of the 1s, bump a dice, and do 11 damage. Which is pretty damn good for the start of floor 2 unless you're playing someone like Witch.

You're just not fully optimizing your start of game, which is leading to these losses.

I dunno what to tell you man
hothead dealing 12+ damage to me in my first fight on uptick is just what it is
AI rolls sixes two turns in a row and the most damage I can output in a turn is 6
