Report a translation problem
You can manipulate it, but usually it's not easy as it's mostly just driven by traits and other things you only have limited control over. You'd probably only do it if there were either going to be a big pay-off, or that particular character was going to be easily swayed. You can use the tool-tip to see what is driving the conviction changes for that character (as well as others to get ideas what maybe needs to happen to the character you want to change).
I find it easier just to work around their convictions, in the same way as one does with great families.
