Need advice as Rome against Carthage
I was just playing Ironman game and probably it got nuked because my country randomly went to War with Carthage and I did not have any allies and they had all theirs. It was also doing that war where it would instantly add lands to their country so they sent small stacks all over and caused havoc. I was winning all the battles but couldn't move my armies around fast enough to deal with them and got overwhelmed eventually even losing in battle. What would have caused the war to fire? It was going on randomly when I noticed it. Was it the Mission tree?

probably you attacked one of their allies / feudatories. Dealing with Carthage is easy because your army is stronger and most of its forces stay at home. In my game Rome always pushes it out of sicilia, corsica and sardinia before landing in africa.

I didn't attack anyone, it just started. I think they may have declared on me but I missed it. They were swarming me all over. I took over Sicily but they landed and took Corsica first and then started attacking me in Italy. I had to pull my armies out of Sicily to chase them and they landed more men in Sicily after I left. Basically landed where I was not. They also had 20 allies and none of mine were called into the war so it was rough.

you can't miss it, it's announced right at the centre of the screen so if you didn't notice, it's a bug (and to be fair, with the sheer amount of events and tooltips it's indeed easy to miss something). Carthage has lots of feudatories but it's only 2k per one so you need to defeat them once to cripple them (and with 2 level forts they can't do anything at all). The key is to strike first and hard and defeat main carthage forces. AI tends to sign favourable peace when soundly beaten and going out of manpower. Also, use mercenaries as well, and in terms of allies Hispanics tend to be useful.

You should see what's the wargoal, that might help you understand what's the deal.
As for Carthage, you can always get mercenaries to help your troops controlling their landing. But I advise you to build a strong navy. Rome is one of the rare nation I play with a strong navy, simply because its missions imply a good deal of conquests in Mediterranea, including islands. If Carthage cannot move its ships, you've won.

I killed that save and I am in better shape this time around. I think it was the Mission Tree that got me as I had just completed a war with Syracuse and had no money or manpower when I went to war. I won early but just the mass swarm hurt me and my swarm wasn't in the war.

I hate the wars were after they siege, the province goes over to them fully. This change was done with the Diadochii wars as well. I think they should have just taken off the War Score modifier instead (allow you to go over the 100 and reduce expansion) instead of the instance conquest.

Thanks guys. It may have just been a bad game. I fought a second war against Carthage in a new game on the same difficulty (Normal) and won easily.

Pssst, if you like me only play for achievements, I go with the very easy settings and to have female characters in government.
Some asheivements are still very hard.

IT WAS the mission tree. First Provincia mission tree, specifically Land of Tyrants "sub mission". As long as Cartaghe still holds at least a territory in west Sicily, activating Land of Tyrants declares war on Cartaghe with Imperial Challenge goal.
Its all there to be read in the mission description. Pretty useful to subjugate Cartaghe early and getting their land on Spain.
