Imperator: Invictus is a mod for the game. Many mechanics are tweaked and there are many other formable nations, cultures, mission trees etc. over the base game. There is a seperate Wiki for Imperator Invictus.
You can read both and decide which one you want to play.
The last stable version is 2.0.2, I play that version always, and use mods sometimes for fun (playing Troy or playing as Alexander the Great which base game doesn't offer).
Posting wiki links in case you want to check out:
Imperator: Rome:: https://imperator.paradoxwikis.com/Imperator_Wiki
Imperator: Invictus:: https://imperator.paradoxwikis.com/Imperator_Invictus
As Invictus description says:
Imperator: Invictus is a grand modpack and community update to Imperator: Rome, also found on the PDX store here[mods.paradoxplaza.com].
(Achievement compatible on 2.0.4, works on Ironman and MacOS now)
I play the base game with DLCs and nothing is missing to have fun playing it.
Think I'll pick it up while it's on sale, give it a run on vanilla then one with Invictus.
