You have two options:
1. Get rid of Pyrrhus in the event that should fire shortly after the start. Pretty sure this gives a relationship boost with Macedon.
2. Start improving relations with Macedon, Phrygia, etc. right at the beginning of the game and don't stop until you are stronger.
Afterwards, you can expand into Italy before eating Macedon and the rest.
Get rid of Pyrrhus? Blasphemy.
I don't really fear macedonia I already managed to take them down but there is a lot of luck involved and in ironman it's hard...
Phrygia on the other side was unbeatable...
But make sure you peace macedonia as fast as possible as they spam crazy mercenarie armies once you take half their territory, me and rome were getting pushed back by mercs in both wars after winning initially.
EDIT: Actually I'm pretty sure the event is tied to the Epirus Flavor Pack DLC, which was a pre-order bonus.
I managed to ally Macedonia at one point and they never attacked me.
