Citizen are research and commerce.
Freeman are manpower
Tribe are taxes nad manpower
Slaves are taxes.
WIthout iron you cant built heavy infantry but more iron will just give you bonuses and will not change base benefit
So let's say you are producing glass, move in/breed extra slaves, when you reach 15, you get 2 glass from there.Certain Laws, inventions etc may lower the slaves required, i think "farmlands" gives -2.
Then you can trade it away for big bucks, or keep it for the 'Surplus in capitol' bonus.
It should be noted that the required number is a hard cap, meaning they won't produce 0.5 glass. You have to reach the required number for the extra, or it's nothing.
This means that you should move your slaves around if you can afford the power cost. Slaves producing extra goods is much better than groups of 3-4 living elsewhere
The main way you get slaves is by attacking other countries. When you occupy a province there is a chance that local pops will be killed or captured. Some traits will increase the chance of taking a slave pop if the character is a general.
You can also get them through events, such as being a cruel leader when people immigrate to your country and you enslave them instead.
If you have a large Slave population in a city, they will naturally produce more slaves.
And lastly, sometimes tribesman pops will become slaves rather than becoming Freemen. I think this might be dependent on if they are part of your culture group and what your civilization level is, but that's purely conjecture on my part.
Until such time as the game gets (IF) changed to let Freemen produce those Trade able goods, the game will not function properly with no Slaves.
So if Slavery offends you, do not play this game. There is not a lot to choose from between slavery, serfs, indentured servants, and many other forms of forced labor in history and any game (including all of Paradox's strategy games) that tries to model those time periods. All are objectionable to many modern societies, and yet we are not that far removed from the Totalitarian states (which were almost totally forced labor) of the 20th century in terms of time and living memory (and most of us would not prosper or even survive in such societies based on forced labor).
If you object to slavery in the game then you will have to limit yourself to ways of getting more territory without conquering it by military force, because every time you conquer a city you reduce it's freemen to slaves.
Me: no, but we do need gender equality. we will fix 3rd world problems when wamen are equal
but seriously having surplus gives pretty good bonus. tho 1 surplus to every 10 slaves would be better. should be 10-1 for first 20 slaves then 15-1 for next 30 and so on
I reliize that...
AFTER I promoted them....
