How to become independent as a subject?
Playing as athens, I'm a subject of that big yellow greek boi

I guess I have to wait for yellow boy to get into a distant war, then declare war on them or something?

This is gonna suck to learn, but I tried an Athens game and you can't declare a war on your overlord if they are in a war. Sounds kinda stupid to me, but I still tried a couple games as Athens and SO CLOSELY got independence. I failed to achieve it but here's what I did:

Basically, as always, take advantage of situations. If they are about to go into civil war or rebellion which is like 50/50 go for it just before, not during. They have a couple subjects down near you, but Megara will likely have 5k for a while, and maybe up to 10k eventually. The Nesiotic League will be about as strong, but will take a while to walk to you. What I tried was CB for Hellas, basically only Chalkis and get access from Thebes. Siege that, and get Megara after.

After all that, if Phrygia has not come for your booty, feel free to siege those islands because they won't accept peace very soon because they are giant compared to you. I believe the only real way you could peace them out is if they go stupid and never fight back against you, or they get into a war or rebellion.

If you try a game with my strat tell me how it goes, cause I have still yet to even achieve it. Farthest I got was occupying Chalkis, Megara, and most of the Nesiotic League, but still being like 50 score away from peacing out Phrygia and then they came for me.

My Crete campaign just failed miserably, so I will try this athens strategy now- on very easy difficulty, ironman of course

In my current game phrygia declared war on some nations to their north, phrygia now has 0 manpower along with many of their puppets, when this war ends I might declare war & go for it

Here you go fren. When you hold the war goal for awhile this pop-up shows, saying if the enemies dont show up then you auto-win war, despite wargoal

Actually I lied. the event means absolutely nothing, just like most features in this game! the war continues.

Oh I know about that, but usually it's really hard to live that long. Just did an Athens on normal and I lasted long enough Phrygia just made me give an island and I am free. They did end up taking Lemnos which is apparently 32 warscore for an island in the Aegean, more than my capital even was but hey, I got free, along with Sparta and Boeotia backing. Lets see if I can get that Pan-Hellenic achievement.

the AI can free itself if the opportunity presents itself, one game I saw Phrygia completely melt, every single one of its satraps had declared war on them. Then they collapsed

As a side note, I consider totally silly that you cannot declare war to your overlord when they are already in a war.

Come on, it's the best time ever to start an independance war while your overlord is busy with other problems !

The designer of the game puts some limitations on what you can do for "gameplay" reasons, but it's more game-breaking and immersion-breaking than really efficient !

Crete start is quite difficult. All the powers there are equally balanced and as soon as you manage to conquer a few cities, the others will hate you. But it is possible to conquer them all: I managed in my current run, but it took me four or five restarts to get it done.

haha crete is like CK2 noobie island. It's a very good place to learn the game, and everyone is very equally powerful, except the democratic nation

I wanted to try to form the pan-hellenic league, but macedon beat me up

I've heard it call noob island, but I'd rather recommend Rome as a better place to learn the game, as you'll have to try really hard to actually fail as Rome :)

I'm currently running a Crete-Arkadia-Hellenic League game, down to the last 100 years or so.

You need to code it in place of the dev team. All good features doesn't exist in this game. :(

in my bactria campaign i waitet for my overlord to be involved in a war without calling me in.then i DOWed him,won some battles, got a lot of slaves and at the end land and freedom...

Update on my Athens game, took all of Crete, most the Aegean islands, all of Hellas and parts of the Peloponnese after beating Macedon. Also random Anatolian lands cause why not? Athens can get extremely powerful just by hoping the islands, and if you build a big enough navy, you can easily just take them while Phrygia and Egypt are busy. Might post a picture later of what I currently have. Also Egypt has declared on me twice for the Naxos islands but has barely a navy, so free cash lol.
