We tried everything, using traps etc. but we just did not deal any damage anymore even with the right element.
Not sure how they want us to do it but we did managed to kill it before it killed the town.
We were 3, one defended while the other ones where slapping on him as soon as he spawned. It was doable, but we really had to hit him the whole walk to the town. So basically about 3 ingame days of constant hitting on a walking Jötunn.
Not really something we like to do, if anyone has more ideas, let us know too.
Once it gets to the point that you're dealing ~100 damage per hit on the Jötunn (and dealing with a health pool of nearly a million) there's not much you can do without the right runes. Runes like soul-powered seem to ignore their armor, allowing you to deal up to an extra 500 damage per hit, per rune. All those souls (and your power) goes away, however, if you get hit by the giant and one-shotted.
Late-game Jötunn armor was horribly out of whack even before this patch, and now it's even more silly. The changes in the patch this week make very little sense to me.
These are the steps i take to maximise the length of the survival run.
- First step when making your game you put everything on the easiest setting if you want to go long for example the 100 days achievement EXCEPT for the MAP SIZE set this to the largest size you can!
- CLASSES - SEER/WARDEN
you can choose whatever class you like but if solo i would strongly recommend the Warden. it makes the early game easy and you dont need to waste on repairs.
- IF solo you MUST get the base gates up as fast as possible. so your base can essentially defend itself in the early game (1-50) if in the group i would always have at least 1 person be ready to defend the base whilst the other deals with the jotun.
- WEAPONS - This is standard but i thought id put it in anyway, you want to make a weapon of each element as soon as possible. i always prioritze lightning/shock first as this is best for the base minions
- BLOOD MOONS - This is dependant on how confident/ geared the base defender and the base is. Towards late game (day 50+) it is still advisable to go back to town to defend during the blood moon and then go back to the jotun as soon as possible. (The Big Fatty minion that spawns can burn the gate down if left unchecked)
- When the jotun spawns One player must find the jotun as fast as possible. once you have found them i chip them down to around 50% of their health, its not entirely important to do so but i rec dealing a moderate amount of damage to the jotun.
- IMPORTANT DO NOT KILL THE JOTUN EARLY! this is the misconception with survival that the jotuns get stronger as you go longer in the survival.. but they only increase in level the more jotuns you KILL. we want to AVOID killing them as much as possible.
- From here the plan is to have the player who is dealing with the jotun constantly engage it but not kill it, this will net you almost a 50% increase in the time its going to take for the jotun to reach your base and when they do you can drop them easy because they will be low life and most important low level.
- this is why we choose the LARGEST map in game creation so you have the best chance for the jotun to spawn as far away as possible from your base meaning you can stall him for longer which gives us easier jotun fights in the future and that = more days in survival.
- Final things to finish off -
its not without its flaws and sometimes you can just get a bad map or the jotun just insta spawns in your base so these are also things to be mindful of.
Doing this IS the best way to go long and its easy to do 100 days using the stall method.
Just to give you an idea of what level the jotun was when i hit 100 is always around level 15-19 depending on map layout building success and general progression in the early game.
I hope this helps you go longer in survival its frustrating that it is this way and it isnt communicated to the player clearly at all and seems somewhat counter intuitive to have you stalling the jotun instead of killing, but i assure you it IS the best way to do 100 days.
Sorry its a bit long haha
Don't worry though, they just buffed them to be even more overpowered, patch 1.10 increased all their stats with every level even more across all difficulties of survival mode.
Use Warrior.
Their dodge is broken and gives 2 seconds of invincibility instead of the ~0.5 it says on the tin. This can be used between attacks to become completely immune to damage.
Their mana boosts bolster the most powerful damage sources in the game - fast hitting abilities with damage boosting runes. Get your hands on as many Soul Powered runes as you can (Or Nothing to Hide, not as good but still decent), and get a weapon with a fast hitting abilities. Options include the Raider Axe for early game or the Muspelheim Maul and Sigyn's Blade for late game. These will still drop off eventually, but this is easily the highest damage per second you can get in the game, and is the best bet for reaching day 100.
For 100 days always drop jotun to low hp and kill when it get close to village. This way you will get half of the jotuns fights and they seem to scale based on number of spawns instead of day number.
Basically in my 100 days run killed 28 jotuns without much problems, last week done 28 jotuns in a bit over 50 days and last one was super annoyingly long fight.
I hate changes which "increase challenge" and simply remove fun. If people want challenge give them another tools (like runes which lowers your dmg but give you better rewards or sth) instead of making it unplayable for other people
It started multiplayer(4-5) so I went hunter before I had all the classes for the resource gathering trait since it was survival, but I've been solo for about 40 days now. The best use of it is if I die(aka getting 1shotted by any attack) then I can respawn right next to the jotun with the respawn totem.
At at this point I'm thinking Warrior for mana swap strategies and iframe rolls and Guardian to always survive with 1 hp are kings of lategame survival.
