Better alternatives to this game?
I like the concept and was willing to buy this game, but after reading the reviews, I get the picture that the AI is stupid, you have to micromange a lot and you hit the ceiling of what can be achieved in this game quite fast.

Anyone knows of a similar game (set in the same historic period) that does these things better?

There is a game called Ancient Cities but its not out yet
I enjoy it a lot - more than Banished.

Well, I haven't played it myself. But from what others have said, I gather that there are problems with inventory management, job assignment and the hunting and fighting raiders is very starightforward and shallow. These comments appear more than once, so I tend to believe them.

Banished, Planetbase and Forest Village are similar games. I also recommend trying this game for yourself instead of believing what you have read online.

This is currently the best game set in that period. Ai is not that stupid and you do not have to micromanage at all. It is popular to blame Ai for everything but often the problem is bad player decision and gameplay strategy. I have made it several times to end-game with 200 pop. No crashes, bugs or bad Ai encountered. It might not be super efficient managing in managing big villages but you do not need to be super efficient to grow and survive.

I have played for over 20 hours now and havent had any problem with inventory management or job assignment, and also like I said you dont have to micromanage a lot, you can set limits for everything like you only want to have 20 sheeps then the AI will kill the oldest ones and collect meat, skin and bones.
The raiders yes, they are shallow but the developer already said that they will improve this system

Well, I guess, I'll have to wait until they release those promised extra features, because it doesn't seem deep and realistic/immersive enough for me right now.

I'm not aware of any citybuilder that is set in the same time period so there definitely isn't much else to play. The AI works fine for me, not sure what issues other people have with the AI but for me it's working as expected. You can also set priorities for jobs and set production limits and whatnot. I don't have to do any micromanaging at all.

Sorry but anyone who say Ai is not bad is lying.

People starve to death despite walking past storage full of food next to a campfire.

Lone hunters (despite more being assigned) chasing animals for hours without getting kills (because they won't coordinate)

High priority building not getting built because it needs 2 sticks, as a gatherer walks right past it carrying sticks.

.

Sure its good game at its core, and getting to end game is not hard, but the Ai is pretty horrific

I checked the Ancient Cities. On the first glance, it looks promising - much less casual and more realistic than DoM. Too bad it's only in the alpha stage yet.

Yes, it looks promisind indeed. I dont know when the ETA is but shouldnt take too long I guess.
In the meantime I have fun with DoM I guess I will get Ancient Cities, too.
But DoM is for this price really a good deal and much fun imo, with a few improvements I can imagine playing it a long time.

Banished actually had a worse AI. I would have a settler chop a tree, take the last wood required for the house, then watch him go to eat, then get warm, then go harvest stone (all still carrying that 2 wood I need to finish the damn house). Take the stone and drop it off, change jobs, go fishing, go eat again, and finally drop off the wood, after 4 people died of hypothermia.

Horrible AI.

At least in DoM the person might do 1 thing like get warm or eat or something survival-like and then immediately drop off the goods. If there are open slots in the tent he was in, he would drop it off in the tent then eat or get warm.

Good peon.

AI is stupid, but there is literally no micromanagement. to the point I could use some.
Gunta0 Mar 4, 2019 @ 5:08am
For this price, no alternative actually. And above all it is currently the only game in this style really released.

This game has not yet been released and they are recruiting people on their site, which means that they do not yet have a complete team.
