Another option is to take a similar build with Carrier.
EDIT: answer seems to be: "sometimes" -- lol
EDIT x2: the swarm constructs don't get shields if they are spawned from destroyed enemies. I'd have to look at barrage, but it's only +2 projectiles. Homing MIGHT produce shielded blade constructs, and with barrage it might produce one pair per shot.
Don't take Spontaneous Generation on Carrier w/o Vital Bond! It's a terrible interaction, otherwise, and will badly gimp the lifetime of the drones you generate yourself. But it's relatively easy to get a pretty large swarm of shielded swarmlings, however, using Shielded Constructs/Apex Machinery, as the unshielded ones die off really fast.
Trouble I had with this build is that unless you've got a bunch of exploding shield mods on your constructs, blades + barrage is terribly weak (even more so with convergence.) The right order matters, and I had to get the velocity tree entirely as well. The key to the build is to get shielded constructs quickly because you're going to use your blades as shield bombs. Volatile shields + Tempest break + Reflexive shields got the damage you could do in the thousands, which is what you need. Round 80 boss died in two hits.
Even with that however, the homing projectiles are very short range, so I spawned all my turrets, sat in the corner and fired towards the center. This allowed the homing drones to loop and saturated the map with zipping shielded blade drones, which in addition to generally clearing the map at some point did get a count of 40 or more.
