Railguns are another insane weapon if you build up velocity
Suprisingly, a drone build (Any weapon+engineer+temporal) goes really far, i use temporal so the sheild effect radius+drone sheild can slow down all the things, halo works too
I got my best score with the Blade weapon+Halo shield+Shielded constructs. This lets you shoot fire AoE's AT the enemies. Build for projectile count, burn damage, drone or allies maybe, and shooot shoot shoot.
I've also had good luck with shieldless ram/melee type builds. Go for as much hull/regen as you can.
Another great run I had was with Architect body+automines+loaded mines. I happened to have grenades with it, but this could be interesting with several weapons.
Halo shield is great, counters quite a few annoying enemy types, going for max size+effect is pretty good.
Adaptive armor is great, does a ton of work, and getting Rebuke is very handy for certain weapons.
Emergency systems is great, literally saves your life, repeatedly.
Railgun is great. Very flexible, works well with almost any weapon upgrade, and the piercing trivializes certain enemies. A simple "gun" build I did got me my rrecord for average DPS. (burst fire+charged shot did a lot of work)
Etc etc etc
Start with [Vortex] and [Hullbreaker], get [Rapid Reconstruction] and [Charge Shot]. You're only interested in the charge up, not the actual effect at the end. It's a bonus - but the main damage comes from pulling enemies from across the screen. Most die to the absolutely massive Vortex and everything else crashes into your hull and dies that way.
Grab all armor upgrades that increase hull-strength and resistances as you go along. Over time, you can extend this with mods that trigger on hull impact and mods that cause and improve burn damage. It's absolutely bloody mad and easy to get started with.
Mods to avoid: Velocity increasing mods (unless offset by size/damage), shield mods (duh, you're gonna dump the shield). Velocity is self-defeating. While your main damage comes from the charge-up, the Vortex itself CAN deal significant damage if it stays within an enemy. Higher velocity makes it easier for the enemy to break free. Don't do it.
Vortex effectively gets better the more hull and regen you have, and being able to charge between waves lets you dunk anything that's not a boss almost instantly.
I expect its scaling potential is less than other weapons as there are a lot of mods that make it less effective.
I've also had success with rapid fire, charged, volley (didn't get fusilade, maybe it'd worth it), homing (all the tree), auto-deploy loaded mines railgun build. Whole screen is just full of extremely deadly homing railgun bullets.
Easy to roll up, no-worry build.
Got to wave 100 today.

Very much not taken in that order, of course. It was rough early in the run getting the ally first thing after the weapon/body/shield setup, then drones soon after. Focused on "try not to die" hull upgrades to begin with then started to refine the minions a bit (including the shield itself) before shifting the shields onto my army. By the time I did I had I think 10 defense drones and 3 allies (interceptor came up quite late in the run). Adding Discharge turned the whole thing up to eleven just in time for the 100th wave to come in and wreck my day in spectacular fashion.
Railgun Loaded mines with the Supermod that let your projectiles go through another screen.
I took almost all weapons upgrades exept the Volley one because you lose too much dps, thats not worth it against multiples Elites and bosses at 125waves+
