I recently received this game for free from my friend ✩ Helenα ✩ who managed to get extra review copies of the game from the developer for my Steam group Visual novel, JRPG, Anime.

This second fantasy visual novel with adult yuri content (NSFW sprites and CGs) and fourth visual novel on Steam by Salamandra88 and 7DOTS features a young farmgirl Rosetta who moved to town to apply to study at the Academy of Magic to become a mage. Unfortunately, due to her inaptitude with magic, she has been rejected countless times.

One day, a witch from the Eastern Empire Zara Kiranis ends up hiding inside Rosetta's house to evade pursuing guards. Zara makes an offer for Rosetta to help her leave the town without getting caught by the guards and she will tell Rosetta the location of a hidden medallion that will enable Rosetta to wield magic and fulfill her dreams. Rosetta decides to take her chance with Zara's offer after she made a demonstration of her magical abilities. Rosetta and Zara might develop feelings for each other as they live together while helping Zara to escape the city.

Having played Salamandra88 and 7DOTS's earlier fantasy visual novel with adult yuri content Sweet Fantasy, this visual novel retains the charm and humour with a large number of colourful, attractive, cute and funny CGs, SD CGs and H CGs (the game can now be uncensored in the preferences section of the in-game menu), and character artwork sprites with facial expression and outfit variety. This is a large improvement over its earlier title and the artwork by 7DOTS is the main highlight of this visual novel by being top-notch. The game also has attractive and cute artwork in the game artwork cover, Steam achievements, emoticons and profile backgrounds to showcase on profile.

The plot remains cute and funny while also doing well to build up the suspense and also offer fanservice throughout at various intervals. This helps to keep the reader interested in reading through the storyline and dialogue and attempting all the different endings.

The background music by Peritune and WindSphere provide a wide variety of pleasant, comical and stirring music to match the medieval fantasy setting and the romance themes featured in the game with a useful music player in the extras section of the game.

Overall, this game as the second title of the Sweet Fantasy series by Salamandra88 and 7DOTS with new story, setting and characters is a large improvement over its earlier title in every aspect. It is a longer visual novel with playtime of up to 4 hours to reach all endings and unlock all CGs and achievements (a published community guide is available at the time of this review to help players unlock them). Recommended when the game is at good discount or bundle offer.

Game focuses on the player character Rosetta helping a fugitive witch, Zara, escape a town from the city guard / kingdom's Princess. There are a variety of ways in which they can escape the town (or get caught) and multiple paths their relationship can take - and multiple endings as a result. A playthrough took me about 1.5 hrs (although some endings are longer than others, and I speed read - took me 4 hrs to complete all endings and unlock all CGs with help of Tab skip).

Pros

• YURI - never enough in the world!
  
• Charming characters – I really liked both Rosetta and Zara. Both had a lot of character development in the short time we spent with them, and I’d have happily spend longer getting to know them.
  
• Fantastic artwork – the sprites are really cute and high quality, and both girls have various poses and alternative costumes throughout the story.
  
• 46 CGs to unlock (for a £5 VN that is an insane amount!), including lots of kawaii moments and ecchi girl love. (you don’t need a patch for the nudity - can't beleive they got away with that :D)
  
• Multiple endings – there are a range of endings from bad (nobody dies though!), bittersweet to wholesome yuri goodness!!! You'll need perhaps 8 playthroughs (I forget exact number) to unlock all endings, achievements and CG.

Cons

• Translation issue – its translated from Russian and English, and I only saw two spelling / grammatical errors. It’s a great translation. However, Rosette frequently refers to Zara as “d*rkie” throughout the story because of her darker skin tone. It’s not meant in a negative way, the context is used in the same way you may refer to someone as “blonde” or “brunette”, but I get the feeling something has been lost in translation and the Russian translator didn’t realise the offensive connotations the term has in the English language.

Overall this is a great title. If you like cute/ecchi yuri – buy this now. Really looking forward to future yuri titles from this developer.

Okay, there are some SERIOUSLY suspicious looking reviews on this visual novel right now (four reviews posted within the space of a day or so, from bare-bones accounts which have never posted any other reviews, all negative and in broken English, all with a remarkably high number of "helpful" votes - really?), so I feel compelled to put my own thoughts in.

Escape from the Princess isn't some grand, over-arching epic; it's a relatively short, colourful, enjoyable tale covering a few days in the life of our magical failure of a protagonist and an unexpected guest.

I can't stress enough how impressive the art is, and the sheer amount - especially in a visual novel at this sort of price point. Just doing a quick count through a fully unlocked gallery - there are forty-six CGs in there, and most of those have multiple variations for times of day, or actions happening. Oh, and not to forget that there's simple animation added to several of the CGs too (a windmill's sails will turn, for example); it's not earthshattering but does add to the game's charm. The character sprites are detailed and expressive, and again with numerous variations for mood, outfit, and time of day.

There're a reasonable few choices during the game, too, leading to eight different endings/epilogues.

On the downside - the English in the game isn't perfect; the author/translator aren't native English speakers and it shows with a few minor grammar or tense issues. It's never difficult to read or understand, just, don't expect Tolkien-level English.

And, as a few folk have noted, it's not super long; on the flipside, given the amount of art in here, I think that's understandable - had it been a long story, then the artist would likely not have escaped from her drawing tablet for several years! Seriously - another VN might simply mention a character looking at some cloth with a view to a purchase. For EftP - that's a full-screen CG.

I bought this with my own money and I'm happy to recommend that you do the same. It's well worth it.

I'm a visual novel developer myself, so I have high standards for these games. And I was extremely impressed. Escape from the Princess is the best indie visual novel I've played, and I'll explain why in detail.

ART: The art is likely the strongest element. The character art is beautiful and the illustrations are both heartwarming and sexy - a perfect combination. The backgrounds are also fantastic, and they are even animated. There are only 2 main characters, but the game benefits from the narrow focus by allowing for so many pictures and poses, including multiple outfits.

The interface was also pleasant and the animated effects were very smooth.

STORY: I'm primarily a writer, so I naturally have many thoughts on the writing. Escape the Princess features two lovable main characters. Both of them are flawed in different ways, which only makes them more endearing and create fun friction when they bicker with each other.

Your choices can lead to 8 different endings, each of which reveals new information about the story. The characters also behave differently towards each other depending on how you act. A friendship, romance, or antagonistic relationship can develop depending on how you guide things. This sense of ownership of how things progress is the strongest element of the storytelling, but the game should also be praised for its humor.

I think the game should also be praised for avoiding mistakes that other visual novels tend to make. Common mistakes include relying on "Dating Sim" style mechanics which aren't fun, love triangles which often feel artificial, creepy non-consent issues, and having too many pointless side characters whose dialogue doesn't really advance the story. Escape from the Princess wisely avoids these.

The game isn't terribly long, but especially at the price point, it feels satisfying.

It should be noted that the game is originally written in Russian, though the translation into English is very good. There were only a small number of instances where word choice or grammar was out of place.

MUSIC/SOUND: The music is pleasant, but not distracting, which is what music should be in a visual novel.

TECHNICAL FEATURES: The game had no technical problems that I could see, and the menu, gallery, and other options felt easy to use.

OVERALL: I have played Salamandra88's other games, and I feel like this one is by far the best. It combines the fun cuteness and silly fun of 'Sweet Fantasy' with the more complex storytelling of 'These Nights in Cairo.' And it has two extremely interesting characters, who I grew to really care about. They are the best in-game couple I've seen since "Life is Strange." It wisely avoids many of the pitfalls in other visual novels. Overall, it feels very special, and I feel very lucky to have played it.

Rosetta, the protagonist, decides to help a fugitive witch escape town despite her obviously hiding something. Sexual attraction and romantic feelings ensue.

Praises

• While the story is a bit silly, there is a decent amount of humor and interesting happenings to keep the player reading.
• The multiple endings are interesting in seeing how good or bad things can go based on choices.

Complaints
• Typos and occasionally awkward English translation.
• I didn’t really feel much from either the romantic scenes or erotic descriptions. It just felt too rushed. There was no thrill.
• The story is silly because the fugitive witch can teleport, and yeah, at first she doesn’t know if she has enough power to do so, but like, what stopped her from trying while she was hiding out at Rosetta’s house? If she knew she could teleport, then she could’ve easily went to a part of the castle town’s wall where guards weren’t hanging out and teleported through it for an easy escape. Instead, the story is about wearing ridiculous disguises that obviously will not work rather than utilizing magic. Sorry, but I was rolling my eyes at it all.

It was okay. I didn’t dislike it, so that’s why it’s getting a positive review. The story had potential, but it just went in an odd direction to me. With some improved writing, I would’ve liked it a lot more. The art and humor was good though, so that’s what saved it.

Escape from the Princess is a relatively short fantasy Yuri Visual Novel developed by Salamandra88 and published by 7DOTS.

Rosetta’s big dream is to become a strong magician, however, she gets kicked out of her magic academy because she seems to not have any talent for becoming a magician at all. One day when something seems clearly off a powerful witch suddenly appears at her home, searching for help. The witch, Zara, is a wanted criminal, yet Rosetta helps her. So, I’m sure you all wonder, why she would help a criminal. Well, it’s an easy question: It’s because Rosetta would do anything for becoming a magician, even breaking the law. Though, what happens if Rosetta will start to develop feelings for the witch Zara?

At first, I was a bit confused because Rosetta was willing to help her way too fast. Is she just naive? Very soon you notice magic is indeed everything to her. If I have to describe her, I’d say she is a dork. She is so unpredictable, not only in her actions but also the things she is saying. Of course, that means this game will contain a lot of fluffy and comedic moments. I chuckled a lot while playing this game and sometimes I was just speechless at how much of an air-head Rosetta can be. I also have to say if you have a thing for air-heads and unbelievable hilarious moments, by all means, this is the game you were looking for. Zara, on the other hand, seems very confused about Rosetta at first. I mean you definitely have to get used to her and I could definitely associate myself with Zara, Rosetta just seems very weird in the beginning. Once she opens up, she is the most lovable girl though.

One thing I also have to mention is that I noticed girls love, i. e. lesbians weren’t a totally normal thing in this game. This means it was definitely unusual for girls to be in love with each other, if not even unthinkable. Some may disagree now, but I think this makes the game more realistic. Since I’m a sucker for forbidden love, I appreciate it, if there is a torn, whether you should or should not love the same sex. Given Escape from the Princess is a historical Game, more or less, it makes sense why lesbians were very rare and questioned. Though, the only thing that really counts is their love for each other of course!

I have to say the story is very predictable and sadly it probably won’t end up surprising you. I still enjoyed this game regardless and the girls are both very cute and very different. As I was playing Escape of the Princess I wasn’t even sure if it’d be real Yuri. Rosetta and Zara seem to have so different personalities and it seems like they will never truly get along. Oh boy, soon I was proven that I was totally wrong. Both girls were really made for each other and I started to root for them to be happy together eventually. We all know it’s not that easy and beware, this game does contain a lot of troubles and drama for their relationship!

Escape of the Princess contains a few different endings, however, the routes were basically the same except a few key scenes. I would suggest you to play the happy ending at least, as the other ones might leave a bitter aftertaste. On the other hand, some endings were so sudden, you can’t help but want to find out more about Rosetta and Zara. I noticed as I played through the different endings, that the skip function is grayed out if you didn’t see the text yet. So you can immediately see if the text is skippable and won’t waste any time with trying out whether skipping works.

In case you’re worried about sexual content, there is an option to turn them off in the menu. I think it’s a very nice feature since there are situations where you don’t want other people to see you playing a game with sexual content, plus there is no need to download an additional patch! We definitely need more games where you can freely choose whether you want 18+ content to show up, as they may not be everyone’s cup of tea. I also have to add that the sexual content is very light erotic, even if you enable them in the menu, you can only see nipples and it’s definitely not the focus of this game.

I’m sure you’ve noticed as well that the artwork is simply gorgeous. I just have to critique that some CGs looked a bit unnatural, the propositions of the characters were very off in a few CGs. Luckily, it only applies to very few ones. I was surprised how well the CGs and backgrounds were animated, it really stood out and gave them a nice additional touch. Also, the characters have different positions and facial expressions, it will never get boring to watch the girls blushing! The text really bothered me though, because they were too long sometimes and it would have been better to split them It didn’t happen too often, though it was clearly visible, since the text was even off the text bar a few times, which really end up confusing me and made it hard for me to concentrate on the game. Although this game does not contain any Voice Overs it was still very entertaining to listen to the soundtracks while playing Escape from the Princess, they sound very comedic and cheerful.

So, in the end, I can definitely recommend Escape from the Princess if you appreciate unique humor and enjoy sweet love stories as well. If you’re looking for a game with a superb storyline, you should look elsewhere though. This game is definitely a nice way to spend your evening with it.

I hope that this review contributes to the appearance of trading cards, helps the game to get a higher confidence metric and will motivate the developers to create more visual novels.

Escape from the Princess is attractive by its large number of beautiful, cute and great CGs as well as enjoyable background music. The game is a visual novel with fantasy and yuri content (including NSFW scenes, that can be censored in the preferences section of the in-game menu). There are 20 achievements in the game which consists of making certain choices and reaching all endings which takes about 4 hours.

The setting of the visual novel takes place in a small town where Rosetta lives. She dreams about doing magic, for which she has absolutely no ability in. After another failure in entering the Academy of Magic, a witch Zara appears in Rosetta's house, who promises to endow Rosetta with magical abilities if she helps the witch. Of course, Rosetta cannot refuse such an offer, although she understands that Zara is hiding something. The storyline of the game is actually interesting and isn't that simple as in Sweet Fantasy. At the same time, it is sometimes amusing and sentimental.

Overall, the visual novel turned out to be very nice and should be interesting for fans of visual novels who are looking for something simple, same as for newcomers of this genre who don't know where to start being acquainted with visual novels.

В заключение следует сказать, что визуальная новелла получилась очень хорошей и подойдет как любителям подобных игр, ищущих чего-то попроще, так и новичкам в этом жанре, не знающих с чего начать знакомство с визуальными новеллами.

Escape from the Princess is an ecchi-themed yuri-based visual novel about a girl confronted with a situation involving another strange woman who ends up inside her house. As you progress, you make the usual kinds of choice-based decisions, and then have resulting outcomes in typical VN style. The women are nicely rendered in, and the story itself is fairly interesting. Overall, ecchi and light, but there are some small jokes along the way as far as innuendo. Twists and turns, but the story eventually unfolds and makes sense. Well, somewhat.


Art is beautiful! I love the CGs and renderings. The drawings are nice and all the lights and shadows feel very ... latex-like or something? Hard to explain what I mean, but I guess if you have eyes you can see a few of the pictures in the store page.

I liked the character personalities, and the inner thoughts and struggle with the main character as you go along through the story. It's got some good narration, even though it feels weird in spots the way it's organized. I thought it also seemed too predictable about how things were going from very early on, so I felt it gave too much away, at least for my liking... Not to say there were not twists and turns, but I was hoping for a bit more depth!

I like having the choices, story arcs, multiple endings types of games and of course, visual novels are no exception to this rule. The shortness may be made up for if one completes all achievements and checks each arc out. It may justify the price a little more, since my one playthrough was fairly short overall...



Very light on the ecchi themes, but still works for the genre. Don't expect harder-softcore though! If that makes sense...

The overall course of the VN was rushed, and the short length was unfortunate for me, at least on the story arc I decided to go through based on my choices.

The overall feel just kind of felt... how do I put this... bland and very basic. Luckily the graphics are vibrant enough that it saved it for me. I guess in a way, just the overall core presentation feels a little lackluster or something.

Again, with the story being short, the eventual climax and resolution were kind of rushed in terms of overall flow. Not to say it was a bad read, but in a way I wish it had been pieced together more thoughtfully and carefully.



It’s a decent visual novel. Nothing too complex or elaborate, but the CGs are nice to look at. The art really saves it in my opinion. Giving it at least a full extra point or point and a half for that alone. There’s a gallery too, multiple ending arcs, but a fairly short story. It’s more of an innocent and playful ecchi than most. Very light elements at play. Done well overall, and could suit a wider range of audiences than some similar visual novels I have read/played. Delivers enough to be reasonably good though. I guess the price isn’t too terribly bad, but I wish there were a little more text to support that argument further. Good feels though! Recommending it.

A short but lasting visual novel. Escape from the Princess not only has dazzling and shiny art, there is also adventure and personality contained within. I enjoyed this game for what it was - despite not liking ecchi, I wasn't put off by it in this game because it is not there just to fuel the fanservice of poorly-made erotica. The interactions between the girls - whether bickering, friendly, romantic, or sexual, were all reminiscent of two people with a real connection. Both main characters were interesting, passionate characters with depth and consistent personalities. For how short the game was I feel like their relationship developed fairly naturally, albeit a bit quickly by normal standards.

One of my favorite details about this game is the background art. It's all original and just as pretty as the character art, if not more so. Plus, parts of the background scenes are dynamic and move around a little bit, but not so much as to be distracting. Escape from the Princess is a refreshing GxG visual novel that does not force or fetishize same-sex attraction, but instead tells an endearing story of two lovers and how they came to be. The only negative I can think of is that the endings are a bit rushed and end with a simple bit of dialogue from the protagonist explaining how things eventually fold out, which isn't the most creative way to write an ending. Still, the rest of the game makes up for that and the few minor errors in the translation, so I'd say it's definitely worth looking into this one for your collection.
