What is scourge?

Yeah, I can't tell if its a curse or an enhancement.

Only thing I notice is that weapons seem to sear through opponents with it applied, so probably a general weapon strength enhancement going by the "+1" that displays when it's activated.

All I know about scourge is that.
When you get a scourged weapon, you cannot get rid of it.
It increase your scourge, so that mean some curses can occur and elites enemies appear more often.

Scourge has 2 parts of it:

a) scourge points
b) scourge tokens

Scourge points increase the chance of enemy spawning with a prefix (prefixes like more health, drops a bomb on death, etc, plus all prefixed enemies hit x2 as hard). Scourge points also act as a multiplier on your score.

Scourge tokens provide different inconveniences, such as increasing shop prices, etc.
So basically, if you want to have a bigger challenge, but get a higher score - get some scourges.

Also tossing in here that if you want to lose your Scourge weapon, a few of the options available to you are the statues that will occasionally spawn. The Warrior statue will take whatever weapon you currently have equipped away. If this leaves you with no weapon, then you will receive the ancient revolver. The Well has a similar affect when you receive the "Unlucky" reaction.
