I can confirm this looks like a complete port of the game to mobile, I can definitely see myself spending a lot of time on this.

I haven't kept up with this, but what's the point? Why not just make an EVE mobile client instead?

The point is accessibility on a much much wider market. Mobile is a hugely untapped market for CCP and a lot of other "actual" game developers, it only makes sense for them to try this out. If such a client were on its own server, sure that'd be ok, but there's a ton of changes between Online and Echoes that they kind of are somewhat different games regarding mechanics.
