Nirth,
I am intrigued by your experience in pvp with a low skill pilot still being able to provide useful contributions to the group, even if loads of damage and solo killing isn't one of them. is your corp recruiting newbs? i would really like to participate in what you are describing. i dont need handouts or free ships and stuff, i am happy trying to make it on my own. what i really need is knowledge.
thanks.
But, the other day I decided to amuse myself with my market alt who is skilled as a hauler and a market trader. :)
A good place to learn low skill combat is in the red versus blue combat thing. Pick a side, join up, and fly frigates into combat. It's a great way to learn. If you aren't aware of the red versus blue fight check out: http://rvbeve.com/forums/
Note, some people don't like them so, as with all things, your mileage may vary.
EVE really is about the player more so than the character. How you, the player, react is usually more important than the skills. Now, some ships will completely obliterate others just because of the nature of them, but if you think about it that's knowledge of the -player- and not of the character. If you know that X ship will dominate Y ship then if you fly Y and X shows up you'll get out of there. Conversely, if you stumble upon X while flying Y then you'll win ;)
I have a corp mate who has something like 40 million SP and he noticed that a lot of his 'core skills' are still at skill level 2 and 3 - yet he is a very successful PvPer.
You touched on the knowledge i am trying to gather, which is how to effectively pilot. just having the in game skills trained is less important then understanding the game mechanics and using them well. and from what i understand, joining a similarly minded corp and playing and discussing is how to get this knowledge most effectively.
There is no rush to know everything in EVE. I've been playing for awhile (on and off) and there is a lot in the game that I do not know.
My advice is to play the game and have fun. Try different stuff and don't worry about being 'perfect' or what other people are telling you to do. If I had listened to what others told me to do when I started EVE I probably would have stopped playing. When I started, I went to 0.0 space immediately after finishing the tutorials. "Everyone" said that was stupid and a newbie had no place in 0.0.
I had a blast.
I focused on logistic skills (healing) when "everyone" told me that I shouldn't..
One of the most enjoyable activities in EVE for me is to salvage. shrug.. it's just what I like to do :)
So, basically, do what you want and follow your heart. Explore the game and have fun. Ignore anyone who tries to tell you that you HAVE to do whatever. If you find a corp that has a minimum skill point level ignore that too.
Tying that back to the OP: play the race you think is the coolest ;)
....rust, lol
