so can u have fun as alpha?
I watched a ton of videos on YouTube, and it feels like you can't. Please give a short answer if you know ways to have fun as an Alpha—just don't say 'it depends'; tell me how you're having fun as an Alpha.

I don't believe that you should think about EVE as a free to play game. It is a subscription game that, with lots and lots of time and effort, you can sort of pay for with in-game cash.

The grind to pay for a month of gametime is not fun, it is not rewarding, and it keeps players locked into content that is definitely profitable but maybe not what they'd rather be doing.

I think you are much better off just paying the subscription and having the ability to do everything. EVE is a game worth playing for sure, but playing as an alpha clone sucks and grinding to become an Omega clone sucks more. There's a ceiling to what an alpha clone can achieve that is only broken by stupid expensive ship modules.

you kinda have to experience it for yourself and see what you like. I haven't got omega status yet, but there's lots of stuff to do as an alpha player. I enjoy mining, agent mission running, PVE combat, and the market.

PVP is more inline how the game is supposed to be played, so you have to expect it often as you are not safe anywhere, but that shouldn't discourage you (it did me at first), because there are ways to progress in the game without doing PVP battles.

if you want to focus on PVP or do more dangerous stuff, you would want to join a corporation and fleet up for those events.

also omega status allows you to experience more stuff, but you still have to contribute to your arsenal and strategize the same way an alpha player does, it's not cheap, time consuming, and it's high risk/high reward.

I gave that a read and man, you're wrong on multiple levels about multiple things. It's fairly obvious that you are upset and are biased against the game.

OP, ignore N3tRunn3r, he's making things up.

Yes, there's a ton of things to do in EVE as an Alpha Pilot. From consequential PVP to relaxed mining and PVP.

What people like N3tRunn3r fail to understand is Giant Ships = Winning EVE. Some of the most impact power plays from EVE's history occurred in a station. That includes the disbanding of a multi-thousand player alliance to market manipulation on a grand scale.

Generally speaking, you'll want to ask questions to anyone who will respond to you whenever you run into something you don't know or don't understand. The EVE Playerbase is amazingly helpful.

Contrary to what people like N3tRunn3r will tell you, people will bend over backwards to help you, teach you the game and get you into a Player Corporation, ESPECIALLY if you're new or alpha.

In fact, one of the largest Alliances in the game is dedicated to helping new players!

You should also remember the following:

-Never fly something that you cannot afford to lose. You WILL lose ships and it is normal, common and expected. Each ship lost is a learning experience.

-Undocking is consent to PVP in EVE. You start in an area where NPC police will kill any PLAYER who attacks you without provocation. They will NOT stop you from dying but the aggressor won't escape them.

-JOIN A CORP! Everything is better with friends and EVE is designed with group play in mind.

-EVE Skills train in real time, even if you're offline. Plan thoroughly by picking a career path to start with before branching out into other paths.

If you ever have any questions, reply to this thread and I'll answer as soon as I notice.

Welcome to EVE!

PS, Here are some things Alphas can do:

PVP, Tackling (Restraining a player's ship in PVP), PVE, PVE Support, Dozens of forms of industry, exploration, mercantile, trading, etc.

The answer to your question is: You will enjoy EVE even as an Alpha Clone if EVE is the type of game for you. Think about it like this. Alpha is a demo, a way to get your feet wet and try out the game for free.

tell me how you're having fun as an Alpha. (While Alpha accounts are at a massive disadvantage.)

While things like that indeed do happen, it's important to note that only a tiny fraction of players will ever accomplish something so grand. Telling new and potential players that you can do anything, become an infamous warlord, create and destroy empires, et cetera, sets them up for disappointment down the line.

Most players will never achieve anything of note. You can have lots of fun in the game, sure, but for most people that fun will be had within the confines of solo PvE gameplay or being a bottom-rung, order-following member of some large group that has the same sort of application process as a modern corporate job.

So yes, a player can have fun as an Alpha. But it would be fun along the lines of some casual MMO gameplay. You can do some mining, you can do some lower-end PvE content, you can trade with a few dozen market slots, you can join a newbie-friendly group and take part in the occasional PvP op. At some point you will hit a ceiling of "fun" because you get stuck at a certain income rate due to being limited in content and/or PvPing in the same lower-end ships starts feeling stale, and you'll want something more. I'd put that time frame at around 4-6 months.

That's a bit too general, but if you can narrow down your question a bit and/or talk about your expectations from a game like this in general, I can try going into greater detail. Maybe provide an example of some other games you've played so I can think of some comparisons of gameplay scope for free/paid content.

The answers I'm looking for

example:
Player (A) - I having fun mining (as alpha)
Player (B) - I having fun PVP (as alpha)
etc
Dust May 3 @ 5:02pm
I mean, I've been spending 50 hours doing nothing but low and null sec relic and data sites, without fighting anyone or anything, just scanning stuff and making 10 mil every 30 minutes. I'm having fun doing that in a probe as an alpha.

EDIT: I should have prefaced this with "I have an Omega account and an Alpha Account". Below, I'm speaking solely regarding the Alpha Account.

I enjoy mining with my friends on my Alpha Account. - Group Activity

I have fun with small gang PVP with my friends on my Alpha Account. - Group Activity

I have fun with exploration on my Alpha Account - I mostly do exploration in Lowsec/Nullsec and in Wormholes so the sense of danger is what I enjoy I suppose. - Solo Activity.

--- Complete Transparency ---

I do not have fun (Alpha):

-Solo Mining
-Gate Camping
-Running Missions (But I'm not really fond of PVE so...)

Also, the last paragraph of what Shotgun said is fairly accurate, though he let some bias slip in. EVE, like IRL and any other game changes drastically when you decide to be social and engage with other players.

In general, Shotgun can be listened to for advice... Most people here, not so much.

Back 5-6 years ago, being alpha was a chore... now you have Abyss, Pochven, gas, ore, low effort pvp, high end pve (remember, Society ships dont need skills for full hull bonuses like Gnosis).

Simpler would be name what you cant do as Alpha. Ice mining, most high-end modules and proffessions like research (upgrading craftable blueprints), industry (crafting stuff from blueprints), Planetary Industry (setting up completely safe and afk base on random planet and wait for stuff to produce), Capital ships (big and expensive ships) and T2 ships cannot be used. As new player you wouldnt be able to afford and have skills anyway.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VcEXpGKUOYg&list=PLXllDeIzDzd6lXfUvgWZJJsgQzhyFWJk_&index=2

I recommend this Youtuber for learning what you can do ingame and he even throws a lot of stuff that can be done as Alpha with dosage of secret knowledge play game.

TLDR: Eve is as fun as you yourself desire it. It all depends on what connections you will make with players and what goals you will set to achive.
Krido May 3 @ 7:00pm
Abyss - solo dungeons that you need keys called "filaments". 3 for frigate, 2 for destroyer, 1 for cruiser. It comes from T0 to T6 where T0 is tutorial with 1-2 enemies per pocket. In order to enter, you need to create fleet with yourself by right clicking yourself and create fleet with.
Dungeon is made by activating key and teleporting into weird isolated wormhole space. Players cant hunt you down there but you have time limit of 20 minutes to complete it. If you fail, you will lose ship and capsule (its pilot with implants if you got any [pilot upgrades])

Mining ores or gas is pretty boring but still it is simple activity. You get miner ship, go to asteroid belt and mine. Then return to station and sell stuff. Be reminder that You are never safe in Eve, even in high security space so be careful. If you feel danger, warp out instantly.

Career missions are your typical tutorial missions on several jobs:
Security - you shoot npc ships for mission rewards
Mining - you mine for mission rewards
Distribution - you take cargo and be space trucker by delivering it somewhere else
Exploration - fly around and scan data/relic sites, warp to them, play hacking minigame for salvage (relic) or blueprints and industry components (data)

Its preferable to do all of them, they usually 10 missions per type. It will give you starting skill books, show you several gameplay loops, give free ships and money.

English Help - this is ingame channels that sole reason for existence is for new players to ask questions and getting answers without being trolled or scammed.

Entry-level pvp you can get by using frigates, frigates navy, destroyers, destroyers navy. All those hulls can be skilled into within 2 days along with weapons and basic modules.

For not being trashed too much, i recommend joining Factional Warfare 1 out of 4 Empires. You can fly in low security space 0.4-0.1 and do "scout" or "novice" plexes. Its special spots in low security systems where you warp in, wait 15 mintes to capture point and get reward.

Scout sites are either navy (limited to T1 and navy variants frigates) or advanced (T1, T2, navy and pirate variants).

Novice is same but for destroyers and below (read all frigates).

For Factional warfare i highly recommend watching videos because it deals with standings (ingame reputation systems) and you might angry some main Empires. That will result in them not giving you missions in high security space, as well as they npc chasing you in those systems that belong to them.

More importantly, go to English Help, talk to people and if possible, find like-minded people to play together. It will increase enjoyment of game.

You can have fun performing any activity as an Alpha that Alphas are able to perform. During the first few months of playing, the game will feel fresh to you, and it won't matter much whether you're Alpha or not because everything will be new and exciting.

I know you specified in your first post that you don't want an "it depends" answer, but fact of the matter is that it's exactly the answer that best suits your situation. Whether or not you'll have fun will depend entirely on whether or not you find the type of gameplay that EVE offers fun in itself. Do you like the stuff you see in the trailers and the game description? Then you'll have fun. EVE is an open-world MMO where you can fight NPCs and other players, mine, build, trade, and socialize. If you find that fun, then you'll have fun. Alpha restrictions won't inhibit your fun for at least your first couple of initial months. After that, prepare to pay, because higher-end ships, gear, and PvE content are locked behind the subscription.
The author of this thread has indicated that this post answers the original topic.
