Strip Mining Lasers on a Porpoise or an Orca?
Just a simple question? Can you mount Strip Mining Lasers on a Porpoise or an Orca?? They mount externally on the Exhumers because the Exhumers, Porpoise, and Orca do not have turrets... Has anyone ever tried to do it...

orcas and porpoise use drones for mining. You cant fit mining laser of any kind.
Not sure is those 2 have better mining rates than a covetor

Appreciate the prompt reply... Flying a tanked up Mackinaw right now,,,

I think a fully skilled Orca can mostly match a fully skilled covetor, but it's more profitable to use one orca and several covetors to take advantage of mining command bursts since covetors are many times cheaper than an orca with similar ore output (but isn't anywhere near as tanky as an orca, but they're cheap comparably).

it can't come close.

an orca is a mining fleet command ship and totally useless for solo mining.

orca is a FANTASTIC boat, but not for this purpose. you need some VERY pricey drones to make it even close to worthwhile. much better of to get a barge, or better yet find a small mining fleet.

many multiboxers (like myself) will let a couple of people in the fleet at no cost just because it's satisfying to maximise boosts.

Or you just train mining drones to level 5 and racial ship skills without breaking the bank on fancy expensive mining drones. It does match.

Doing most of that... Got the drones.. Augmented IIs.. Got the drone training and neural training done and right now I'm out there solo and this orca is pulling in just about as much ore per hour as my Mackinaw and it's maxed out with Drone IIs.. It doesn't have the augmented kind but they are substantial... and yes it is very expensive.. My Orca is worh over 2 billion ISK... but that big girl does mine some ore as well as provide excellent fleet support... I fly one Augmented Hobgoblin II for defense and 4 Augmented Miners IIs for the Ore...

You're setting yourself up for an expensive gank there.

That's always a possibility in this game... I fly with a Corp that's based way up north on the edge of low sec and null sec space... We see our fair share of Gankers every day... Every time they come in and Gank us we get the combat ships our... Hunt them down and get rid of them.. So getting Ganked is nothing new here.. I've lost 6 ships over the last 2 months.. Two of them were Macks along with some pretty expensive cargo.. But the way it looks that's the way the game is played... and by Ganking unarmed mining ships Concord gives us carte blance to seek revenge.., That's provided they don't get to them first...

If I remember correctly a orca whit good drone skills can mine about as fast as a covetor
yai.da Feb 18, 2021 @ 3:31am
That it can.. It already has for me... It mines just about as good as my Mackinaw....Although I do love my Mack

Say, where do you mine usually?

In my humble opinion its no use flying an orca unless you are going to box mine with multi accounts and take advantage of the boosts. And an orca fitted to a value of 2 billion? Even with Aug goblin 2's people can speed tank round you and your drones will never catch them. You will certainly not need those just for rats. Not in low/null.
Kit one out for about 850 mill (google the fit) and run 2/3/4 alts box mining in Covetors. Watch the ore roll in.
My point is go cheap and go hard.
If you get nailed then you still not lost as much as your 2 billion orca :)
Your first mistake is mining in low and null without backup. Again, it can match a covetor's mining rate with the tank and ore hold of a subcapital which is the point of the thread, OP probably doesn't have multiple accounts yet.

I don't mine in low or null... I'm in Oimmo which is high sec and that's where I mine.. The only problem is that we border on low sec.. Don't get anywhere near null sec but low sec is just next door.... Stay close to home.. Never even have to use a jump gate to get where most of the good ore is.. Plenty of it right in my own back yard... The Orca isn't just for solo mining although mine is setup to where it can be... It'll get a lot of work in fleet support as well and we'll stay close to home... At least I will.... So far I've never used a jump gate to get to a good mining field so why take the risk... The only time I use the jump gates is to get to stations that have the parts and modules that I need for my ships... Case closed... So far all of my losses except for one have been on parts runs... Thanks for the advice.. It is very much appreciated and noted... Live Long and Prosper... So Say We All,,,

Not how many of us here would do things, but if it works for you, then it works for you.
